Remembering the Fateful Day in Dallas When President John F. Kennedy Was Assassinated

CBS) It seems so long ago, and so recent.

Those of a certain age will remember where they were 47 years ago today when they heard about the shots ringing out in Dallas. Subsequent assassinations of public figures did not quell the pain felt by the nation when President John F. Kennedy was killed, less than three years after entering office, at the age of 46.

Shortly after noon on November 22, 1963, President Kennedy was waving to the cheering crowd as his motorcade passed the Texas School Book Depository on Elm Street when gunfire was heard.

The president slumped into the back seat of his open limousine with gaping wounds in his head and neck.

He lost consciousness immediately.

A third bullet tore through the chest and arm of Texas Governor John B. Connally, Jr, who was riding in the limo along with the Kennedys.

The car sped to nearby Parkland Hospital where the president, 46, was pronounced dead 30 minutes later.

The governor's wounds were severe but not fatal. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, seated next to her husband, was not injured.

Two hours after the shooting, police arrested Lee Harvey Oswald and charged him with murder.

* It was sad that C.S. Lewis death received no headlines because of the death of Kennedy. *

Remember when Princess Diana was killed? Shortly, after than Mother Theresa passed away.

Though Mother Theresa got some coverage, what got the lion share of coverage?

Nothing has changed.

50 years of hero worshiping political Camelot and lionizing the Kennedy's is over! ENOUGH already!

I was walking into History Class in my sophomore year of HS. A friend of mine ran up to me and breathlessly said, "The President's been shot!!!"

I got very angry and told him that was something not to joke about; it wasn't five minutes later, that the Principal made the announcement over the PA system.

The reactions were incredible.

Rightly or wrongly...AT THAT TIME...the man was much loved - at least by myself and most of my classmates and peers.

It was then...and remains....devastating.

Not only that, but the liberals and the media surmised that perhaps Mother Theresa died so that she could escort Diana to heaven.

I lost my lunch when I heard that one.

I remember that day clearly. I was in the third grade at school. Principle came into class and told us the President had been shot. You could hear a pin drop. School was let out immediately. We all went home and stayed glued to the TV for the next 48 hours.

My 88 year old mother, whom we currently take care of in our home, swears to this day that LBJ had something to do with the assassination. Funny thing is, I came across the following podcast interview of a now retired 79 year old FBI agent that was involved in following up on threats to JFK, and later involved in the assassination investigation, and lo and behold, who does he finger as behind it?.....LBJ and J. Edgar Hoover. Very interesting interview. Worth listening to with a open mind.

That’s when I became a news junkie, I think, during those days and weeks after Kennedy was murdered. So long ago

You know.. I never thought about it that way... but, I think the same was true for me. I was only 4/12... but, I vividly remember watching (in B&W) the horse drawn casket and hearing the drums.

I don't remember where I was when I heard about it... I guess, the news didn't make that big an impression on me at first. But, several days of seeing all the reactions did. I remember a LOT of time looking at LIFE magazine photos of the funeral.

I was a senior in high school, in the school library when the first rumor came around. The following period, when I was in Social Studies, there was an official announcements.

The most astounding thing about it was that the black kids were acting happy about it. Hi 5s all around.

There isn't a dimes worth of difference between JFK, RFK and Fat TeddyK! ALL 3 were lefties, ALL 3 were immoral and ALL 3 were despicable creatures.

Reagan Man: you seem to have a problem with the Kennedys...all well and good.
Question: were you even alive and cognizant (say 14 yrs old or better) when the President was murdered?

It is the bane of history writers and buffs that it is almost impossible to view history from the perspective of those living it at the time. If you ever have the extreme good fortune to meet a teacher of history that can provide accurately that perspective....hang on to them like grim death!

It is wrong, painful, and very misleading to apply our current knowledge to events of the past...as it is in this case.

The evil John Kennedy was (or was not) engaged in was completely unknown at that time. Sure, he had substantial groups of "haters" and detractors - what politician didn't (think hard of what most were saying about Nixon at the time), but as to the "personal history" that has been uncovered since then not only about John, but Robert...and of course Teddy, was completely unknown at that time.

Crazy as it sounds and looks to us now, they were the absolute top...the very "First Family" and yes, Camelot.

One can only wonder what our present day is going to look like 50 years from now??? I'll be long gone by then, but you may still be around!

Here's a fun effort for ya...write your thoughts about some of the political figures of our day...print it out (if you do it on a computer), then seal it in an envelop.

Open the envelope 50 years from today...and see how your thoughts written "as the events happened and the people lived" match up with what history will be saying.

Fun!!!

I remember my mom crying. Our family was military and definitely Republican, but he was OUR president, and we cried. Then, for several days, a haze of tv....lying on the floor and watching tv. That’s when I became a news junkie, I think, during those days and weeks after Kennedy was murdered. So long ago....and I still remember all the details.

In hindsight, I'd have to say that is what made me a news junkie too. I was 13 and in the eighth grade. Four solid days of assassination news, LIVE on every channel, no commercials of any kind, just the ongoing report and funeral, including watching Oswald shot dead, on live TV.

I often look at that photo and wondered how the press let an unknown individual with no camera or press credentials get in front of them.

That one little murderous communist Rat Lee Harvey Oswald created so much pain and mayhem that we still have to remember his cursed name all throughout USA history.

Not necessarily.

Oh...I probably shouldn't even put this here...but what the heck.

Take a look at the photo. Draw an imaginary line straight from the top of Oswald's head upwards. Now...take a look at the fence behind him, and note the position of the sun necessary to make the shadow on the fence (relative to the straight line you drew in your mind).
Also, take a look at the shadow angle on the fence below his right elbow.
Now...last...take a look at the sun shadow Oswald's nose makes. See any angle???

Kind of make you think, huh?

Another question...why would a person have such a photo taken of them if they were intent upon doing harm to a political figure? Were it you, would you want this kind of "evidence" found???

Just sayin'.....

Probably for the reason that they figured school would be out for the rest of that day or tomorrow.

You should have been living in a town with a large number of Cuban refugee families, as I was. There was literally dancing and celebration in the streets, and many of the locals didn't, couldn't understand why. But all those kids I knew had lost a father, uncle or older brother at the Bay of Pigs, and most blamed JFK for the broken promise of U.S. Navy air support made by their CIA *advisors*.

I remember my father telling me the same kind of thing. He said when he saw the look in LBJ’s eyes on TV when he was being sworn in, he thought he had something to with it.

Sorry to hurt your feelings. This isn't 1963! We evaluate people like the Kennedy's on historic truths and facts. Not on revisionism.

You sound like a typical defender of liberal numbnuts. Which is what the Kennedy's were. Bottom line. Conservative FRee Republic is no place to be defending JFK or his brothers. Period. And No liberal should be given a pass for his/her actions today, or from 50 years ago.

My strict Catholic relatives in Johnstown PA were riding high when JFK was elected in 1960. Many of them even went to his DC inauguration. My Dad and I wanted Nixon. As with most American homes, for four solid days the TV was turned to coverage of the President's death and funeral. NBC, NOT CBS. That was then, this is NOW!

>>>>>Crazy as it sounds and looks to us now, they were the absolute top...the very "First Family" and yes, Camelot. There is no logic or reason in your post.

The term "Camelot" was applied to the Kennedy Family by Jackie, post assassination. As we know now, it was a fallacy then and a bigger fallacy today.
