Two-Legged Chihuahua Spends Thanksgiving With New Owners

A two-legged Chihuahua left at a Riverside animal shelter is spending Thanksgiving with his new owner, who intends to make sure the little pet lives a "a healthy, happy life," a Riverside County Animal Services official said.

The 4-month-old puppy, affectionately called "Roo" -- short for kangaroo -- by animal control officers, was brought into the Western Riverside County Animal Shelter on Thursday as a stray, according to John Welsh of the Department of Animal Services.

He said the black Chihuahua, which has only its hind legs and stumps for front ones, is able to move around well despite his disability.

It's unclear how the dog lost his front legs, but animal control officers suspect it may have happened during an attack by larger animals.

Roo's story generated a lot of interest, with some 50 people Advertisement

[ Barrier Reef Pools ] filling out applications to adopt the puppy, according to Welsh.

Yvette Bocz of Malibu was selected Tuesday from among the applicants.

"Yvette wanted to make sure little Roo would live a healthy, happy life as a dog -- and that was one of the highlights in her application form," said Welsh. "In other words, Yvette was not going to treat Roo as a freak-show dog, or a dog merely for display purposes. She wanted to make sure Roo was loved as any dog."

She also promised to fit the puppy with a mobility device that will aid him in walking, according to Welsh.

After Roo was vaccinated, neutered and microchipped for identification, he joined other Bocz family pets on a 200-acre ranch, Welsh said.

The cost of adopting him was $105 -- he county's standard rate.

When you have an animal that valuable, you don't eat him all at once.

We had a stray show up this evening - no collar, but very friendly. She curled up on the doormat as if she has nowhere to go. Right now she’s asleep in a crate on the porch, door open so that her family can collect her if they’re looking, with food, water & a blanket. I’ll take pictures in daylight tomorrow and post them around the neighborhood, but we may well have a new dog. We’ll see how the rest of the crowd likes her if she’s still here Monday.

I’m hoping she came down with somebody who’s visiting and just wandered off and doesn’t know where to go back to. Steve thinks she may have been dropped, because the mark of the collar is still in her fur. She looks like a foxhound, but I didn’t think they got that large - Steve’s estimating her at 60 lbs.

Anybody got suggestions? I know our local animal control is overwhelmed, and I don’t want a well-mannered girl put down just for being homeless.

Yes. Keep her.

After all, dogs are better than wives.

If you doubt that, just lock your dog and wife in the trunk of your car for three hours.
When you open the trunk, your dog will be happy to see you.

Dogs are better.

Our stray moved on in the night. I hope she was just resting, and that her family came looking for her.
