A massive storm brought subzero temps and a foot of snow to the Midwest Saturday, also setting off a tornado warning in parts of the South, forecasters say.
In the Twin Cities... "I highly recommend that people don't plan to be out and about. It's really going to be dangerous to be traveling outside."

Should be my first one in Hales Corners...
Bummer...
It was 77 degrees today in Southern California, gentle on-shore Pacific breeze, sunny, clear, not a cloud...
Orange trees are so loaded, we gave two bags away to the neighbors down the road...
Where is that pic from?
That’s our place from a recent winter which looks surprisingly like this winter.
Do you have a 90% efficient furnace? If so, where do the pipes exit out of?
The 100 gal propane tank is for the stove and clothes dryer only.
Where are you in Iowa? And what’s the snowfall been?
I’ve been waiting for the blizzard all day, and so far, just a covering of snow down here in Iowa City. I’m afraid of what I might wake up to, tomorrow.
Cool system. Do you have an electric strip in your furnace, another backup system or does the geo/heat pump work all winter long?
It was the only system for the first four years (we built in late ‘05 and early ‘06) but we added a fireplace for atmosphere recently...although it also serves well at 20 below when the geothermal is struggling to keep up. The 80gal storage tank is also an electric water heater in an emergency. There is also an air-to-air heat exchanger to provide the necessary air changes.
You have a great house. Did you build it yourself or buy it after it was built? I was going to put in a heat pump this year but I couldn’t get the ARI matching system for the 15 SEER requirement for the $1500 bucks back from the government.
With the look of it, you would need an air to air exchanger because of the tightness of the house.
I designed and my wife and I built it. We love it.
Yup, The walls are 8” of concrete w/ 2.5 inches of styrofoam on each side, R50 prior to backfill. We are watching the blizzard with 40mph gusts and hear nothing inside.
Cool system. You must save a bunch on energy use.
Yup, house and shop building with heated garage, 3500 sq. ft. anywhere from 700-1000/year for heating, cooling and hot water.
It’s neat when the ice is not snow covered and you can see bottom. I believe they are driving on Kipling now if snow isn’t too deep. The water sure bubbles forth with the snow weight.
NW.
I’ve got a three foot drift out the back door. Visibility is practically zero. Strong winds.
I like it. You should replace your heat pump to scam the fed for $1500. Do you get enough light in your house since it is an earth home?
