Video: Jets coach trips Dolphins player during game
Yahoo! Sports ^ | December 13, 2010 | Doug Farrar

We know that the New York Jets are a team that likes to be loud and proud about their exploits. They're a team with a lot of swagger even when things are not going well, which they haven't been of late. Less than a week after losing 45-3 to the New England Patriots on Monday Night football, Rex Ryan's bunch lost 10-6 to the Miami Dolphins, and did so in a much more embarrassing fashion...

Go to this link for the rest of the story as this video must be seen to be believed. A member of the Jets coaching staff deliberately trips a Miami Dolphin player who is running up the sideline to cover a punt return.

Why do they have to keep bringing up the 45-3 pasting that the N E Patriots put on the lowly Jets? Over and over. Patriots pound the jets. Patriots crush the Jets. Why do they keep reminding us of that event which was over a week ago? Why can’t they just report the news about the Jets losing for the second week in a row, instead of how they suffered at the hands of the Patriots? A New York coach does an unsportsmanlike thing, and the first thing they want to do is drag the Superbowl-bound New England Patriots into the fray, and remind one and all what a bunch of losers the Jets really are. 45-3. Enough, already!

Not only that, but reports are that he was escorted out of the stadium before the game was even over by security.

That's because Ian Eagle, the idiot CBS play by play guy was blowing it out of proportion on the air. He bent his knee slightly and the Fin was WAY out of bounds. I don't care if the guy apologized. Jets management ordered him to do so, to try and minimize any potential PR damage.

“Chances are, the Jets coach involved will be fired from the organization and the NFL will hit him with a stiff fine and banish him from NFL sidelines for at least the rest of the season, if not a lifetime ban.”

That is the right thing to do.

Given the shellacking of the Bears last night, it's clear that was less about the Jets and more about a totally revamped and dangerous Patriots attack. No one will stop them from another Super Bowl appearance this year.

I don't care if the guy apologized.

Translation: I don't like the Dolphins, so I'm going to concoct a version of events that fits my bias and argue that version to the death.

A weakness that is too common on FR these days...

When opening lanes on punt/kick-off coverages, DB's are trained to push/force the gunners out of bounds and protect the boundary (I.E. keep them outside since the gunners get to the returner first). Punt/Return coverages are usually a 2-on-1 affair with the gunners, who are usually pushed/forced out-of-bounds, getting tag teamed. There is only a penalty when the person who is pushed/forced out touches the ball first.

Any offensive/defensive player can go out of bounds (Without the ball), but once back on the playing field cannot be the first player to touch the ball.

On the play, the Dolphins' gunner was forced out-of-bounds and tried to accelerated ahead of the double team (Which is legal) thus being tripped by the Jets' coached (Who admitted it).

It's not all that uncommon for a player to end up out of bounds on a play like this, if I'm understanding the situation correctly.

I believe this took place on a punt by the Dolphins, and the Dolphins player was probably lined up on the far outside in what is known as the "gunner" position on punt teams. His job is to run downfield as fast as he can and be the first one (along with his counterpart on the other side of the line) to get to the punt returner.

On plays like this, it's not unusual for the "gunner" to make a move to the outside to get around the player (sometimes two players) that the punt return team lines up on him to impede him . . . and get blocked out of bounds in the process.

While the coach may have extended his knee a little bit, the dolphin player was breaking the rule by running up the field while out of bounds and making no attempt to get back in bounds before advancing up the field. The reality is that by rule there should have been a 15 yard penalty on the dolphins for the attempt by the player to run up the field without getting back into the field of play first.

Concurring bump. (no pun intended)

I liked the response of another Dolphins player after the game . . . he said something to this effect:

"If he had done that to me, I would have gotten up and broken his leg."

I disagree with you. Given the fact that the Jets have now gone something like 19 consecutive quarters without scoring an offensive touchdown, I'd say that game was as much about the Jets as the Pats . . . and yesterday's game was more about the Jets' inept offense than the Dolphins.

He obviously tried to give the guy a Festus. I pity folks that refuse to see the obvious. I’m glad he was identified and apologized. Now he needs to be punished accordingly.

couldn’t agree more.. and then they decide that even if he tried to trip him the Dolphin player was way out of bounds(which he wasn’t anymore than others from both teams are on returns) so it was justified or that it means it doesn’t matter... it’s called koolaid

reminds me of the democrats defending Clinton.. “he never had sex with that intern.. it’s all right wing conspiracy lies, he would never do that”.. then when Clinton admitted it the defense immediately went to “it was his personal business, he was set up, it was only about sex, she seduced him, no big deal, it’s just between him and his wife, it was nothing but a simple mistake move on” ect ect..

simple fact is a side line coach intentially involved himself physically onto an opposing player during a live play in an NFL game.. the Dolphin player didn’t just fall right there because of coincidence.. contact was made with a protruding knee stuck out there to trip him... that should get him a pretty harsh punishment

I’d like to see the video of the player running directly into that coach at top speed ... oh darn, just an accident.

Other players can, however, go out of bounds and return to the field of play to make a legal tackle on a ball carrier - so long as they have established themselves as being in bounds before making the tackle (at least two full steps in bounds). Why would a player deliberately run up the field out of bounds? Probably because it is illegal to tackle or block a player who is out of bounds so players who are covering a kickoff return can get upfield quickly without worrying about other players getting in the way. So long as they take at least two steps inbounds before making a tackle, they are good to go.

This rule has gotten out of hand on kicks.

Gunners are now deliberatly stepping out of bounds so they can have a clear run down the sidelines. Notice how many touching penalties you're seeing on kicks this year?

Personally, I think once a player steps out of bounds (forced or not) they should be out for the rest of the play. That would probably shift some advantage to the receiving team, but the NFL is built on exciting plays, and noting is more exciting than a long kick return.

Did he stick his foot out? did he bend his knee far forward? Was the guy way out of bounds? Give me a break. Ian Eagle made a mountain out of a molehill. Whining Fins. And NO I am not a Jet fan.

I agree with you on this. I was just stating the rules as they appear to exist today. If I was running the NFL, I would consider any player deliberately running out of bounds to be disqualified from participating in the current play.

Obviously an exception need to be made for the player who is forced out of bounds.

No it doesn’t. Just like they changed the rule for receptions this year. Even if you are forced out, you’re out.

You might say the player needs to have both feet out of bounds for him to be out of the play, but other than that, let people force others out of bounds. It would just add another wrinkle to the game.

>>>Ironically this is the Jets “strength and conditioning” coach that did this. <<<

You want irony? Check this out. As a player at Hofstra, Sal Alosi won an award for “good sportsmanship and fair play”. Not quite up there with Arafat winning a Nobel Peace Prize, but close. :-)
