MADISON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - 72-year-old Dick Thompson isn't sure if he wants to fight or give up.
"I want to get the hell out of here right now too much hate," Thompson says one minute.
"I think it's a bunch of bull," he says another, vowing to stay.
Thompson faces eviction from his 38 acres in Madison County. The county lawyer tells 24-Hour News 8 it's because Thompson is breaking too many rules, laws and ordinances; Thompson has no water, no sewer and no electricity in his recreational trailer that he calls home.
"I'm a country boy," explains Thompson. "I just want to be left alone."
Thompson is mighty fine, thank you very much along with his dog, Ace, his horse, Fritz, his bird, Sunshine, and many more.
The eviction papers state go-time is Nov. 30 at noon,' though no one came not yet.
That’s the gobment fer ya! There was once a country called America; land of the free...
Can the government force you to buy healthcare or sewer or water or be evicted??
If he paid his mortgage and taxes then whats the problem?
What gall, forcing him under threat of law to build a home using his own money! This must be stopped.
Next thing you know, they force him to buy health insurance!
He simply can’t take care of himself. He needs a feddie to tell him how to live what to eat what to wear and also he must integrate himself into his community. He can’t be a loner. It’s not correct. (sarcasm)
Long past is the time when you could be left alone by the government if you paid your taxes on time.
Is is because the gobmint has no way of taxing him?
If he paid his mortgage and taxes then whats the problem?
(1) He has 38 acres of undeveloped land, which means he pays peanuts as far as property taxes.
(2) Some local develop has probably decided this is prime real estate, and wants to get his hands on it.
(3) Some local has decided having a hermit live near by is driving down his property values.
From the picture, the camper is perfectly adequate protection from the elements. A typical pull-behind camper.
No septic tank? A single person and an outhouse in the middle of 38 acres is not a problem.
No running water or electricity? So? He obviously has some source of water. A generator is probably more than adequate for his electrical needs.
In a way, this story is symbolic of everything that has gone wrong with the country. He wants to live his life as he sees fit, and the way he is living it isn’t harming anyone (much less impinging on their rights). But the government has decided he must live his life in the manner they prefer, and they are using the power of the government to force him to change his lifestyle.
Just leave the guy alone.
How many acres do you have to own to be left alone??
Drip, drip, drip. Next, it's going to be you or I for the crime of owning an incandescent light bulb, or some other manufactured Ayn Rand-level infringement against the manufactured and miasma-like dogma of the Holy State.
so he’s basically living like the amish?
Well, if we still had any freedom left, the answer would be, "As much as you jiggety well want to own."

ALEXANDRIA, Ind. (WISH) - 72-year-old Dick Thompsons fight may soon be over his land is up for sale.
It brings tears to my eyes, and I don't shed tears very easy, Thompson says of the mountain of support hes received.
In recent days that includes a letter from Colorado with a check for $10 with Land of the Free in the memo line.
Thompson faced eviction from his 38 acres in Madison County. The county lawyer told 24-Hour News 8 it's because Thompson is breaking too many rules, laws and ordinances; Thompson has no water, no sewer and no electricity in his recreational trailer that he calls home. Bottom line: You cant permanently live in a recreational vehicle. Now that the land is up for sale, its clear his trailer wont be his permanent home.
Two weeks ago Thompson told 24-Hour News 8s Brad Edwards : "I want to get the hell out of here right now too much hate. I'm a country boy. I just want to be left alone."
The story got tens of thousand of hits on multiple YouTube pages and quickly became one of the top stories of the year at WISHTV.com. E-mails came in from New Jersey to Oregon, Orlando to Calgary. In a statement to 24 Hour News 8, the Indiana Sons of Liberty, a community militia, said: "It would be a great sight to see a thousand Don't Tread on Me flags flying on Mr. Thompson's property."
Thompson was on the verge of tears with gratitude, saying, Thank you for the support.
I think it’s because the gobmint ain’t gettin any taxes from him. They would rather put him out on the street where he will be a homeless person and qualify for all sorts of benefits.
When we get a posting like this if at possible the naming of the bureaucrats responsible and listing their home addresses should be included in the report.
this man is TAKING CARE OF HIMSELF (the crime) on 38 acres he obviously worked and paid for. He is bothering NO ONE - except the powers that be be who aren't getting more of HIS money, via taxes and/or he has a valuable piece of land that, if they can force him off of - will turn a handsome profit FOR OTHERS and a lot of $ can be passed around.
Contact his Representatives to REPRESENT him. Tell them to get these clowns off this private citizens back. He's probably living off a SS stipend and can't afford a house or a big bank mortgage. (That's his crime. No one else is profiting off him.)
Him today - you and I tomorrow
