I absolutely agree with that. You get a lot more out of the movie if you know what is actually happening. Especially the ending scenes with the old man and star child.
I just watched the fully restored version on netflicks a week or so ago. Interesting. Hard to believe it was made so long ago.

another primate that uses a tool - aka a broken branch - to
probe for and kill them while nesting in tree holes.
I doubt that was known at the time of the book/film, so it's
probably just a coincidence.
