What Is Your Favorite "Grace Before Meals"
Vanity

Posted on 12/23/2010 1:35:35 PM PST by Churchillspirit

With Christmas almost here I want to find a special "Grace" to say before dinner.

Apart from the one we said at catholic school - "Bless us O Lord for these Thy gifts..."etc., I found this one by Robbie Burns:-

O Thou who kindly dost provide
For every creature's want.
We bless Thee, God of nature wide,
For all Thy goodness lent:
And if it please Thee, Heavenly Guide,
May never worse be sent;
But, whether granted, or denied,
Lord, bless us with content. Amen!

Do Freepers have any favorites?

For this day of the dear Christ’s birth,
for its hours of home gladness and world gladness,
for the love within these walls, which binds us together as a family,
for our food on this table,
for our surroundings in a land of freedom,
we bring to Thee, our Father, our heartfelt gratitude.
Bless all these, Thy favours, to our good,
in Jesus’ name. Amen.

I always ask a special blessing on the hands that prepared the food God provided and the hands that serve it, also ask for God to bless the conversation at the meal

From Luther's Small Catechism, "Asking a Blessing":

The eyes of all look to You, O Lord, and You give them their food at the proper time. You open Your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.

Lord God, heavenly Father, bless us and these Your gifts which we receive from Your bountiful goodness, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

I use this Swedish table prayer sometimes:

I Jesu namn till bords vi gå
Välsigna Gud den mat vi få
Gud till ära, oss till gagn
Så få vi mat i Jesu namn.

(In Jesus' name to the table we go
God bless the food we receive
To God the honor, us the gain
So we have food in Jesus' name.)

Bless this food to the nurishment of our bodies
As we give our bodies in your service.

I’m Lutheran, but raised by a pseudo-Catholic. That prayer (the real part) is basically Catholic - as usual for Lutheran.

Bless us, O Lord, with these, thy gifts
Which we are about to recieve
From thy great bounty
Through Christ, our Lord; Amen.

Yes, that prayer (post 10) is not exclusively Lutheran or Roman Catholic. It belongs to our common heritage, of which Luther kept as much as he could.

The psalm verse that precedes it is Psalm 145:15-16.

I have that exact plaque above my kitchen sink! I love it.

When I was young, my Grandpa taught us a simpler version of that prayer, but I had a Swedish friend in college who taught the full version.

(btw, how do you get the font to put the markings above your letters?)

how do you get the font to put the markings above your letters?

In this case, I just copied the text off a search I did, which had the words. There is a way to type in the three "extra" Swedish characters, using "Alt," etc., but I don't recall how to do it. And you can always find the symbols in your Word stuff.

My father always used the KJV on special occasions like holiday meals.

"15 The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season. 16 Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing."

So do I.
