COLLEGE FOOTBALL • Pittsburgh fired new football coach Mike Haywood on Saturday, a day after he was arrested at his home Friday on a domestic violence charge.

Haywood was released Saturday from St. Joseph County Jail on $1,000 cash bond after the charge was upgraded from a misdemeanor to felony domestic battery in the presence of a minor.

Within hours of his release, Pittsburgh put out a statement from Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg saying Haywood had been dismissed, “effective immediately.”

Pittsburgh hired Haywood away from Miami (Ohio) on Dec. 16 to replace Dave Wannstedt, who resigned under pressure. Before his firing was announced, Haywood told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, “It isn’t fair. The truth will eventually come out.”

They should rehire him . Don’t they realize they are giving up a great opportunity to get a call from a sitting President honoring them on giving a wife-beater a second chance, and to bask in the radiance of Obama’s wisdom and god-like judgement?

"If she would JUST FREAK’N LISTEN this would not have happened"

He as a reputation for being a hot headed coach.
Most of us Pitt grads didn't like it from the beginning.
Bring on one of the two Penn State underlings while we can still get them.

The guy just got the job of a lifetime. You have to have control of yourself at all times. Thankfully he's out early.

sadly another ND alum gone bad

when I was a kid, that school used to stand for a pretty high level of morality

Why am I so certain that the administration of Notre Dame is committed to a strong policy of "Diversity is Our Strength"?

I'd surmise this creep has been used to getting a pass for thuggish behavior all of his life.

I foresee another Beer Summit soon. According to the Usurper in Chief, the Pitt administration "acted stupidly".

This may sound racist (which I am not and have never been), but, as soon as I read that he had a child out of wedlock, I thought he might be black. At his age, he was most likely brought up in an environment where this was becoming the norm in the black community.

It would have been better if Pitt had waited for all the facts to come out before firing Haywood, but Dave Wannstedt is a great coach and an outstanding person. I don't know him personally, but I am a long time Dallas fan and have been following his career with interest ever since he left the Cowboys. I'm not surprised that some of his recruits had already changed their minds once they found out that they would not be playing for him.

Miserable failure, thy name is Rich Rodriguez! Maybe he can get a gig coaching a Mexican "futbol" team. :-)
