TOKYO, - The first auction of the year at Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market saw a 754-pound blue fin tuna sell for nearly $400,000.

The blue fin tuna, a species highly regarded for sushi making, was purchased Tuesday by a joint bid from a Tokyo restaurant and a Hong Kong sushi chain, the BBC reported Wednesday.

The fish, which was caught off the Japanese island of Hokkaido, was one of 500 to be sold in the fish market's first auction of the year Tuesday.

Tsukiji market traders said the price of tuna has been rising due to increased Chinese demand for sushi and tightened restrictions put in place due to overfishing concerns.

“Chilean sea bass” is one of the all-time greatest marketing coups ever....by its former name..Patagonoian toothfish..they couldn’t give it away..the fisherman would throw it overboard...

Wonderful meat ... but the price for a fish, even a large fish, reminds me of the ‘tulip bubble’ of a bygone era.
