Am I the only one having problems connecting to Free Republic today?
i truly don't understand the "this is the way it is" ....."take it or leave it" thinkin'
It is your site Jim no question there..... and it is your right to run it as you see fit......but that doesn't mean there aren't options to secure the future of the site....i believe the people who donate deserve more than just...."this is it"
Well, it is Jim's private property. It is his to dispose of as he sees fit.
Jim gets to decide its fate. I respect that. I'm grateful he listens to input and perhaps he wants what we want. We'll wait and see.
I do apologize for being unable to read everything you've ever posted. For the benefit of other Freepers who may have practiced similar neglect, may I assume two things?
First that by "event" you mean being unable to access Free Replublic for hours, days or weeks, during which time we can't check Jim's posting history or anything else.
Second, that by checking "Jim's posting history" do you mean the following, after the site is accessible again :
1) On the main forum page, where there is a "Search Box" in the upper right corner, type in "jim robinson."
2) On the resulting drop down choose "users", then click on the "Search" button.
3) When the results appear, read all of Jim's posts necessary until one finds the posts related to the recent "event"
Is that what you meant? or do you have another esoteric means of finding Jim's explanation of the problems?

To All:
I typically don’t feel the need to explain myself for certain actions I take, but in this case I’ll make an exception.
When I posted this “vanity” yesterday, it was out of frustration. When the Gifford shooting was breaking, I was listening to FOX on my XM Radio. As I previously mentioned, the interviews of “witnesses” by those two idiots: Jamie Colby and Rick Folbaum from FOX were beyond irresponsible! They were pumping these witnesses to offer up unverifiable information! At this point, I was so furious with the way the weekend FOX crew was handling this supposed reporting, that I just had to shut my radio off. I remember thinking: “These idiots are so anxious to report some type of big news…any news, they’re going to get actual facts all mucked up.” Well, surprise, surprise! They later had to go on the Air and admit that Rep. Gifford hadn’t been killed, but was actually in surgery! And I don’t want to hear the B.S. that NPR had previously reported it! Since when does a reputable news agency trust NPR who desperately wanted a “Tea Party conspiracy” with this tragedy?
I knew I had to get home, get on Free Republic and find out what the heck was “actually” happening. For the first 20-30 minutes I couldn’t even connect. When I was finally able to connect, it was moving at a snail’s pace. It either wouldn’t let you post, or would produce a double or triple postings. At this point I’m like: “We have this breaking news, and the site is down…again?” I remember scanning the site to see if there was some type of messages from the Admin to say that the site was experiencing problems. I found no such message or posting (If somebody can point me to such a message indicating site problems, I’ll gladly admit my error and will be subject to public humiliation). Since the speed and connections were hideous, and there was no message from the Admin team that the site was indeed experiencing technical problems; I decided to post my question.
It was never my intention to post this particular thread with the intention of sounding like an ungrateful Smart A$$. In fact, what this situation has actually shown me; is how much I rely on the Free Republic to not only post my thoughts and feelings on a particular topic; but more importantly to get unadulterated facts! In some bizarre way, this negativity is actually telling Jim and the others who host this fantastic site, how much it is NEEDED!
Another thing this situation has taught me; is that we (I) need to remember to offer thanks when things are going right. Come to think of it; I’ve never ever thanked Jim for the service he does in hosting and moderating this site. So Jim, let me say from my heart, this site is a Godsend! This forum is not only a place where I come to express my thoughts and opinions, but more importantly to learn and become knowledgeable on all things news and politics from my fellow FReepers. Oh yes, it also helps me to keep my sanity in this world of liberals. In my mind, no other forum can compare to the Free Republic.
Sorry for the long rant, but thought it was merited.
I think I see your point. Operations that are run by committees are always better run organizations. We can start work immediately on a five year plan.

Thank you very much. It was just a glitch and we will survive. What doesn’t kill us only makes us stronger. And we have had so many of these glitches lately, that we’re really getting a LOT stronger.
I have previously. It's fine to want only donations but I remember when the FReepathons lasted about a week, maybe a week and a half tops. Now it takes forever. People are less willing to donate to a site that pretty continuously runs so slow.
I don't see how selling ad space loses control of the site any more than accepting donations from all of us but okay, It's no skin off my nose if the site runs slow. As has been said before, there are a lot more sites out there from which to get news and post on. (((((shrugs))))))

the great thing about forming a board is your still the “General” let them....no task them with a job and then listen to what they come up with.....you get input from outside the box as it were but still get final say so....cause it is your site....
then task them with implementing x changes.....

I’d rather keep the site non-commercial if we can. Fewer copyright issues and better shot at fair use that way.

Interesting. I can see where you’re coming from.
When I say it, it means it’s just me saying what I’m thinking... maybe something that hasn’t been proven but looks suspicious. And it doesn’t really apply to anyone else’s thoughts.
