Meet Apple's New Boss, The Most Powerful Gay Man in Silicon Valley
Gawker.com ^ | Jan 20, 2011 | Ryan Tate

It looks increasingly like Steve Jobs' reign at Apple is over. If the CEO doesn't return from his third, indefinite medical leave, COO Tim Cook will succeed him, marking a new era not only for Apple but for gay progress.

(snip)

Cook, a famously quiet and collected person, will find his backstory, both personal and professional, the topic of increasing interest and discussion in the tech community. That new attention is a good thing for a man with a reputation as fearsomely good as Cook's. Cook's rise to his position—he is one of the most powerful corporate executives in the world, to say nothing of being the most powerful gay person in tech by a mile—is also a tribute to his skill and work ethic on the one hand, and to the utterly unconventional and unconventionally empowering people skills of Jobs on the other.

I was married in my 40's, and have spent less than 20 hours in a gym in my life. Lucky me, I guess that was a close call.

One more trip to the gym and you'd have been gay. Now we know what causes it! Eliminate homosexuality, shut down the gyms.

Just goes to show, you can't be too careful about this gym stuff. I plan to warn all my buddies who go to the YMCA that they are flirting with deadly danger. For some of them, sadly, it may already be too late -- they are single and in their 40's.

And a good thing that is. Otherwise we'd all be in even more trouble than we already are!

> I am a shareholder and use Apple. Let’s put it this way. If he is being outted without his permission that I don’t give a dang because it should never have been mentioned. But if he is going to be out and proud due to his wanting to advance gay rights and such than I won’t be happy and will have to reevaluated the stock.

I respectfully suggest that before you reevaluate your Apple stock, you evaluate these alleged reports of gayness first. As far as I can tell, they're bogus rumors. If I had Apple stock, and gave it up based on a false rumor about the CEO, I'd be pretty unhappy.

Me, I'd wait until Mr. Cook makes a statement one way or the other, which he might decline to do.

Consider the folks who sold their Apple stock when Jobs announced his time off earlier this week, only to see the stock rise again the next day on the actual business performance of the company. And that was on a real report, not just a rumor!

Of course, what you do with your stock is entirely your own business, not mine. Best of luck!

Wait just a minute now! Are you implying that Richard Simmons is gay?

Good for Mr. Cook. I can hardly wait for the Mac that blows its own fuses.

People will line-up to buy iPhones even if Charles Manson were Apple CEO.

And people are delusional if they believe that this current news will have any noticeable impact on Apple sales.

If Mr. Cook comes out of the closet, I can see it having a positive effect on Apple sales. It would be fashionable and would appeal to one of Apple’s key market segments. If he doesn’t, he probably will be hounded by that segment until he does.

Yeah, I could see a small segment of radical gays getting pissed that he won’t “come out” and start a boycott.

But, right now Apple is selling two iPhones a second any boycott by one group will not impact those sales numbers.

Gays boycotting Apple would be like Rosie O’Donnell boycotting pizza.
