That’s a good idea! Free Republic should become a MMORPG like WoW. Just think of the posts:

“I’ve levelled up! I’m a 15th Level FReeper/Paladin RangerDwarf now! The Lazmaztaz guild are gonna raid Democratic Underground tonite, wanna come?”

My 7-year-old is developmentally delayed in several ways, and he has been banned from Club Penguin AS WELL AS Disney’s Toontown, both FOR LIFE, for creating “bots” that allowed him to do crazy things in the online games, like create ghost characters that followed his real characters around, or getting his character to be able to walk in the sky, etc.

I am not calling the boy with autism a cheater — maybe it was a mistake - but it is SURELY possible.

My little guy was sorely saddened to lose his characters with all their treasures and the hard work he did for them. He is not able to understand that breaking their rules is a RISK and RISKS mean you can LOSE things. But he is capable of some simple programming to do tricks like that! He was able to have unlimited money on Club Penguin as well, though they never caught him on that... :)

Actually in the deep past there are rumors of possible raids on lefty sites with weak signup security, though I know nothing at all about that.

It matters hugely to many people, not just kids.

As for cheating, it’s possible to do (entire websites devoted to cheats, cheat codes, getarounds, and so forth).

And I’ve seen really young kids use cheat codes and hacks, so at 11 he may know a lot about it.

One reason game companies crack down on cheating is because of goldfarmers, people who play online games to get online tokens like magic swords, increased powers, and so forth, that they sell in meatworld for real money. It sounds unbelievable, but there are those who will pay $200 for a supermage sword with over 9000 strength points, just to play an online game.

The article is completely devoid of any detail as to what exactly he’s accused of, but hammers home his disability and how bad he feels.

As far as I can tell you, as long there has been internet access, people have had websites up to tell you how to cheat at games. It usually was a codeword that you could either write up on paper, or memorize, had you the photographic memory to do it, then do it.

IMHO though, I think plenty of people have taken games alone way too seriously.

Well, the big problem here is about people coming to the realization that this is a video game, and it’s not real. If I couldn’t get to the top of some massive online ranking for some game, big deal, when people get to be my age, getting married, remarried, worrying about your kids, or your home, or you’re being a better father than Homer Simpson, are all more pressing concerns than whether or not a game is won. If games are so “real” that people are willing to put so much money into them, than that is the problem, much more than this kid and the cheating part. My feelings were similar to the card games like Magic when it came out, and I was a young adult. People like my niece willing to spend who knows how much money to be the champ of some card game, that didn’t translate into any of these people getting a job. Sure, only the extreme cases did super-bad, but I hope my point is clear. Some things aren’t worth crying over, but when people think all this online “game” stuff is so worth it while a friendly family game of “Life”, “Risk”, “Monopoly”, “UNO”, or “SORRY”, isn’t worth it, that’s just flat-out depressing, and part of what is so seriously wrong with society.
