When it comes to choosing a college, there are a lot of factors to weigh: athletics, social scene, and of course safety. From a parent's point of view, the safety comes high on the list.
Using data from the FBI's Crime in the United States reports, specifically for crimes on university and college campuses, we compiled a ranking of the most dangerous colleges campuses in the country.
Certain elite colleges make the list, including MIT, Duke and Amherst -- a reminder that quality of students bears little on the neighbood.
Methodology: We used FBI data from 2005 to 2009. Schools were ranked by violent crime rate and property crime rate (weighted 4:1). Violent crimes include murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Property crimes include burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft and arson. See last slide for further discussion.

I’m a little surprised to see Duke on that list.
Not if you’ve ever been to Durham!

I’m not. Did you not follow the whole Duke Lacrosse debacle? It gave quite an insight into the populace, police force, and justice system in Durham. It wasn’t pretty.
So all of these colleges are either in (1)densely populated east coast liberal enclaves, (2)close proximity to large numbers of blacks, (3)in the case of Trinity close proximity to large numbers of hispanics, many of whom are undoubtedly illegal.
Again, unsurprising.
I can’t believe that U of H or UCLA isn’t on there.
Why's that? The entire lacrosse team got lynched in 2006.
Maybe they included false rape accusations in their stats (but probably not).
Auburn is NOT on the list. NOT!!!
I was afraid we might have made it with the Lauren Burke murder a number of years ago. That crime, however, was not committed by an Auburn student.
Oh c’mon! 14? How shady is that?
No way does Temple not make that list. I mean Duke? 11? In a WHOLE YEAR?!?!?!

The colleges are all in cities with large black populations near the campuses.
I’m surprised not to see Yale on the list since it’s right smack in the middle of the mini-ghetto known as New Haven, CT.
My daughter-in-law went to Penn for one semester and transferred because the area was so sketchy. Her dad warned her but at 18 she knew better.
I wonder if SUICIDES are considered part of their “dangerous” criteria.
New York University has had one student suicide a year every year for 9 straight years. They even have a documentary looking at this phenonmenon entitled : THE NYU SUICIDES.

Which Penn is that ? UPenn or Penn State ?
If someone refers to “Penn” as a place of higher learning, there’s a 99.9999% chance they mean University of Pennsylvania, and not Penn State University.
Really? The residents of Amherst (Amherst College) and South Hadley (Mt. Holyoke) will find that to be quite a revelation. Perhaps blacks are driving 25 miles from Springfield, but I doubt it.

I have two kids going to Penn State. Of course they also attended public skool so what do they know.
