Henry Cavill Officially Cast As Superman
Dark Horizons ^ | January 30, 2011 | Garth Franklin

It's official - Henry Cavill will play Clark Kent/Superman in the upcoming Zack Snyder-directed and Christopher Nolan-produced "Superman" reboot.

British thesp Cavill ("The Tudors," "Whatever Works," "Stardust") previously came close to scoring the role in "Superman Returns" when McG was to direct, but ultimately missed out when Bryan Singer took over and cast Brandon Routh.

The very handsome 6'1, 27-year-old model and actor was also up for the role of James Bond in "Casino Royale" alongside Daniel Craig and Sam Worthington, Craig eventually winning the part. In recent years he's become known for his role as Charles Brandon, the close friend of King Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) on Showtime's "The Tudors".

Here's the press release:

"Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Henry Cavill has won the coveted role of Superman, the iconic superhero.

The film will be directed by Zack Snyder, who stated, “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Cavill recently wrapped production on “The Cold Light of Day” and stars in the upcoming “Immortals,” opening this fall.

Targeted for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company."

A thread was posted last week about Anne Hathaway being cast as 'Catwoman' in the next 'Batman' movie; and male Freepers went into lust mode. I am a believer in 'equal time'; so here's one for the ladies.

"and male Freepers went into lust mode"

For Anne Hathaway? Yuch. She makes me nauseous. Easily the most insufferable of the young Hollywood libs.

This guy was OK in The Tudors, but I'm not seein' him in Superman - too British. Plus, not big enough.

I actually think the guy in the last movie was passable. What made that picture unwatchable was the horrific script and Kevin Spacy - any movie with Kevin Spacy is unwatchable (post keyser sosey).

I do think Christopher Nolan is of course a capable filmmaker, but his choice for lead is not building confidence.

Even the fanboys are drooling over this choice, although many are expressing sympathy for Brandon Routh; who many feel got screwed by a bad script...

Nolan is a great one, but he is NEVER going to top 'The Dark Knight' with Anne Hathaway...or anyone else, for that matter.

Well, our president isn’t American, why should the Iconic American Superhero be played by one?

Anne Hathaway appears to wear way too much makeup. And as movie star, she is way too bland.

Pretty much everything Hollywood does is a steaming pile and I have boycotted their crap. The Batman franchise was a joke until Nolan. I only watched it because Oldman and Caine are not libs and probably my two favorite actors.

Bale once said towards his former step mother Gloria Steinem “will someone please SHUT this woman up!” She would preach her smug lib crap at the dinner table. The Irish actor in the first film also shuns publicity.

So I would take Nolan over any liberal American director for anything. I really have no interest in anything from hollywood - they support Obama 100%.

I always thought Clint Walker would have been the perfect Superman/Clark Kent. Too bad these movies weren't being made back in the 60s.

I would have liked to have seen Kate Beckinsdale play the role. I only wish they'd make a KOTOR movie so they could caste her as "Bastilla" before her career ends.

Oopsie! You're thinking of James Caviezel (Passion of the Christ).

This is Henry Cavill:

I was a HUGE fan of his Charles Brandon on "The Tudors".
