Henry Cavill Lands Superman (New Movie Man of Steel)

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures have found their new Man of Steel.

Deadline had been hearing for the past weeks that British actor Henry Cavill was the frontrunner for the much coveted Clark Kent/Superman role in this much anticipated reboot.

But as of last week, Warner Bros film chief Jeff Robinov hadn't seen Cavill's or the other screentests and made his decision in recent days. Repped by CAA, Cavill, known for his portrayal of Charles Brandon on Showtime's The Tudors, just wrapped production on The Cold Light of Day and stars in the upcoming Immortals opening this fall.

Directed by Tarsem Singh, Caville in Immortals plays the he-man Greek warrior Theseus who battles mythological gods including Poseidon, Zeus, Minotaur, and Herecles.

Given that set up, Warner Bros clearly has chosen a more macho leading man for Superman than the previous Brandon Routh or even Christopher Reeve.

"He's got an amazing quality. He doesn't look too much like Reeve and Routh but he's big and strong and he has a very modern feel to him," a Warner Bros exec just told us. "We're really going to try and make Superman as contemporary as possible."

And just like it did with Christian Bale in the Batman reboot, the studio has gone with a British actor.

In fact, Cavill also auditioned for the Batman role but lost out to Bale in 2005. He also was a contender for James Bond but was deemed too young and lost out to Daniel Craig.

Clearly, Cavill is a franchise waiting to happen. He also has a past with Superman.

Christopher ('Dark Knight') Nolan? I'm not worried...

Agreed! I cannot wait to see what Nolan does with this franchise!

Meh!

The Superman franchise hasn't fared well since the days of Christopher Reeves. The character and his abilities seems much better suited to animation than live action in regard to story telling.

That the lead role goes to a Brit only adds insult to injury.

Smallville had a lot of interesting shows.

Correction, it’s not Nolan who’s making the new Superman, it’s Zack Snyder who made “Watchmen” and “300.” Which, okay, I think this could still be cool.

ah Christopher Reeves....

I cried & prayed & was in mourning when he had his horse accident

I recall decades ago my ex would ask me each weekend ..well, what is it this weekend? Somewhere in Time or Superman.

I wonder how his son is doing now with the loss/death of both parents.

Hi, aruanan:

Smallville had a lot of interesting shows.

True.

Though Smallville is more character driven with limited special effects. I especially like what the series had done with Allison Mack's character of Chloe. Michael Shank's Carter Hall/ Hawkman, Callum Blue's Zod and Tom Welling's Man Of Steel.

Erica Durance's Lois doesn't do much for me. Though the casting of Michael Ironside as her father was inspired. It's also nice to see Pam Grier exercise her acting chops as Amanda Waller.

Jack.

As long as he shows up and his Superman suit is not in the form of a giant tatoo and he shaves the stubble.

Nolan producing; Snyder directing...this is a good combo, IMO.

Yeah, sadly I had to give up Smallville a couple of years ago. They should have cancelled it before it went sour.

Was it Lois and Clark? Can’t remember, but that show was good at first, but what happened to the Superman star. Can’t even remember his name now. And he was good.

Yeah “Lois & Clark” did start out good and like a lot of others just went downhill. Dean Cain was the star and I still like him.

He actually made an appearance on “Smallville”, and it was one of the rare good ones toward the end.

The girl who plays Lois on “Smallville” is really pretty but her character just doesn’t work out.

One of the worst story lines was when they had Lana Lang’s father be a guy who dated her mother instead of her Mother’s husband. They must have realized it as they sort of just ignored that for the rest of the series.

BTW, Kristin Kreuk could look stunning at times. She was beautiful in the face and had a nice rear but was otherwise a bit skinny.

Yeah, I agree, but didn’t Teri Hatcher strike it rich with Desperate Housewives? Maybe the curse only applies to the guys.
