The Dark-Sky Movement
Buzz Log ^ | January 31, 2011 | Mike Krumboltz

Stargazers now have their Graceland. The Channel Island of Sark, located 80 miles south of England, has been designated as the world's first dark-sky island.

Dark-sky communities are places with very little to no light pollution. As a result, the stars are far easier to see and more fun to look at. According to a buzzy article from SPACE.com, Sark is just 4.5 square miles and has "no public street lighting, no paved roads, and no cars." In other words, save for the occasional flashlight or matchstick, there aren't a lot of things to interfere with the nighttime display, which includes "meteors streaking overhead and countless stars on display."

The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) makes the call on whether or not a community deserves to join their movement. And plenty would like to. The Burlington Free Press explains that dark-sky legislation "has been embraced by about 300 countries, cities, and towns." At first this might sound like something only nature enthusiasts would really care about, that's not so. The United States military is also getting behind the legislation. Too much light can interfere with drills at military bases.

And while they don't exactly get a say in the matter, it's worth noting that creatures big and small would likely also be in favor of more dark-sky rules. Again, according to the Burlington Free Press, there is evidence that "nighttime lights disturb animals and ecosystems."

Ding ding ding, we have a winner! The Stalinists pull the Alinsky method, right out of the box.

Did you read Curly Dave’s post?

Are you on crack? No, seriously... Are you on crack? That has to be the stupidest thing I’ve ever read. You would actually seem smarter if you admitted to smoking crack before you posted that.

The “dark skies” movement has nothing to do with Obama, Stalin, or any other boogeyman you’ve got running around in your skull. It’s about reducing stray light in the night sky; nothing more and nothing less.

Post #16. Precisely correct. The entire “dark sky” concept is something that Stalinists promote solely in modern, Western nations...to bring them down a peg.

The dark sky movement was invented by Stalinists to bring communism to America.

And on a related matter: The darkest spot in America has been located. It can be found approximately 8cm behind hedgetrimmer’s eyes.

“...In 1919 an Italian socialist named Antonio Gramsci began to publish a newspaper in Milan called, L’Ordine Nuovo, or “The New Order.” Loosely rendered, he concluded that the average person would never voluntarily reject the faith and culture of the West. He concluded that the best way to implement a collectivist government was to use an intellectual elite to destroy traditional values by attacking fundamental Jewish and Christian beliefs.”

Antonio Gramsci, 1891-1937

...A. The New Order (L’Ordine Nuovo)
......1. Italian Communist newspaper, founded 1919
......2. Co-founder of Italian Communist Party, 1921
......3. Pre-Prison Writings, ed. Richard Bellamy (Cambridge, 1994)
......4. Selections from the Prison Notebooks (Intl. Publishers, 1971)

...B. Lenin was wrong, and the Leninist revolution will fail
......1. The workers will see the revolutionary government as a new boss
......2. When the revolution fails, the west will re-import Capitalism

...C. Gradual revolution through infiltration & subversion by revolutionaries
......1. Infiltrate the State: elective & appointed office; judgeships
......2. Infiltrate the military: enlist & subvert from within
......3. Infiltrate justice: undermine and discredit state constitutions
......4. Infiltrate education: professors & administrators
......5. Infiltrate & discredit religion: scoundrels as clergymen
......6. Register, then license, then confiscate all privately held weapons

...D. Form or infiltrate international organizations to promote goals such as “global understanding,” “economic development,” “transfer of resources”

...E. Both Capitalism and Judaeo-Christian culture must be destroyed before a Communist revolution can succeed
......1. Religious sentiment cannot be destroyed through legislation, as Lenin believed, but must be redirected from the divine to the state
.........a. Terror will only drive Religion underground
.........b. Religion will then reemerge when Leninism fails
.........c. So Religion must be destroyed in the minds of men
......2. Infiltrate religious academies and become priests and clergymen
.........a. Subtly promote heresy within religious organizations
.........b. Infiltrators must act so as to discredit the church
............(1) Cause financial and sexual scandals
............(2) See that this is given a high profile in the news
............(3) Like-minded infiltrators in the media will cooperate
......3. Once religion is discredited from within, continuously promote the idea that only the state can solve the problems that have been traditionally brought before the church
...F. When propagating revolutionary ideas, cloak them in polite terms
......1. National Consensus
......2. Popular Mandate
......3. National Pacification
......4. Pluralism
......5. Global Community
......6. Economic Justice
......7. Economic Democracy
......8. Liberation Theology
......9. Direct Action

On December 18, 2007, the Village Board passed an ordinance regulating outdoor lighting. For more information, please contact Village Hall.

The Village was honored on March 26, 2008 by Lt. Governor Pat Quinn for our Lighting Ordinance.

During the Earth Hour celebration on Saturday, March 28, 2009, Homer Glen Mayor Jim Daley presented Representative Judy Biggert with a copy of the Homer Glen Lighting Ordinance, encouraging her to "spread it around the world." Homer Glen’s efforts to bring awareness to light pollution has attracted national attention. The concept to “not use light that you don’t need and shine the light you need, where you need it” is an instrumental part of the ordinance. Mayor Daley noted that the night sky is a natural resource that Home Glen is dedicated to preserving.

And the communist inspired movement that brought the United States "earth hour"

Earth Hour 2010: On March 27, 2010 at 8:30 pm, millions of people around the world will come together once again to make a bold statement about their concern for climate change by doing something quite simple—turning off their lights for one hour. Earth Hour symbolizes that, by working together, each of us can make a positive impact in the fight against climate change. In March 2009, during the International Year of Astronomy, more than 4100 cities in 87 countries and over 1 billion people around the world turned off their lights for Earth Hour to demonstrate their commitment to slowing the effects of climate change. Let’s exceed these numbers this year! For more information on Earth Hour, see www.earthhour.org http://www.earthhour.org .

I still remember the first time I really saw stars in a dark sky. We were in Texas outside of Amarillo at an outdoor play. I looked up during the intermission and couldn't believe my eyes. Growing up in L.A., I had never seen so many stars. I remember seeing Corona Borealis overhead. That constellation is almost invisible anywhere near L.A..

The International Dark Sky Week: From April 4 through April 10, 2010, the International Dark Sky Week celebrates the heritage of the nighttime sky by also encouraging people to turn out unnecessary lights. The event began in 2003 as National Dark-Sky Week in the United States and officially became international in 2009, during the International Year of Astronomy. The key to success is participation.

To participate International Dark Sky Week this year, here are some suggestions:

* Turn out your outdoor lights during the week whenever safe to do so.
* Light only when and where needed.
* Encourage friends and neighbors to do the same.
* Change out lights to something more energy efficient and shielded if possible.
* Find out if there are any star parties or events at a local observatory during the week to promote dark skies awareness.

For more information on the International Dark Sky Week, visit www.darkskiesawareness.org/idsw.php http://www.darkskiesawareness.org/idsw.php .

I’m not seeing “promote fanatical devotion to astronomy” on the list.

It does make one wonder just how much light pollution is caused by glowing crack pipes!
