SYDNEY: A seven-year-old British boy nearly bought a real-life Harrier fighter jet for $113,515 via online shopping.
The boy hit the "buy it now" button to purchase the fighter jet, which was put on sale at the online store eBay.
But his father quickly apologised to the sellers, saying his son was not able to buy the aircraft out of his pocket money, news.com.au reported Friday.
"His dad rang up and profusely apologised to us, so it's still for sale. We've put it on as an auction now so that won't happen again," said a spokeswoman for Britain-based Jet Art Aviation, which is selling the Harrier.
The elite fighting machine was part of Britain's arsenal in the 1982 Falklands War, but the government put the plane out of service in 1997.
Falklands War was fought in 1982 between Argentina and Britain over the disputed Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
The US Marines still use a second-generation model of the Harrier.
Dang. Those things are only $100,000?
Wish I could part with that kind of loot right now.
I’d let sit in my front yard until I saved enough pennies to have the thing restored to service and I was trained on it.
smart kid. he knew a good deal when he saw it. Sometimes you just have to pounce on those when they happen.
Geeze, I certainly hope the little boy’s school doesn’t find out about this... they’ll kick him out of school and have him arrested!
That reminds me of Robert L. Scott who wrote “God Is My C0-Pilot”. When he was a kid growing up in Georgia, he actually bought a Curtis Jenny at auction after WWI. I think he paid less than a hundred dollars.
I had a doctor in Grapevine, Texas tell me when he was a kid, his father and he visited the WWII aircraft boneyard where you could purchase any single-engine aircraft for $300-$500.
“buy it now” this child is an impulse shopper :D
And B-17’s for $ 3, 000 or so.
I was teaching a new employee months ago and showed him how the Ebay stuff works. I accidentally clicked on Buy It Now and “bought” a painting. Apologized profusely to the sellers who were gracious enough to cancel the transaction and left a positive feedback, which for transactions, legit or not.
All kinds of aircraft show up at this site. I have seen a TA-4 (trainer version of A-4), a Harrier, and several Mustangs.
The boy obviously needs a raise!
I saw a show on “The Military Channel” a week or so back about the P-40.
I remember they said the Army approved the purchase of the first batch, I can’t recall how many but it was a substantial number.
What really surprised me was the total cost was in the several hundred thousand dollar range. Talk about inflation, they bought an entire fleet of fighters for much less than even a single jet trainer would cost now.
Nice.
Reminds me of the time when I got my mom’s credit card and ordered a bunch of stuff over the phone out of the Sear’s catalog. It never did come though. And for a 3rd grader, I thought my impression of my dad was pretty good!

Please remember that the average weekly paycheck was between $60.00 to $80.00 gross.
I put in a $5 bid for a Mickey Mouse Outfit on eBay and now it seems Im the proud owner of Obamas entire Cabinet.
Damn sticking mouse button.
relisted item
Sure, the jet is only $113K. But wait till he had to buy the armaments. That’s where they get you.
