TI sure does have impeccable timing. Not 12 hours after we published our LG Optimus 2X and NVIDIA Tegra 2 review, complete with a discussion of the 2011 SoC space, did TI announce its OMAP 5 SoC.
OMAP 5 will go into production in the second half of 2011 and ship in phones during the second half of 2012. It’s a 28nm SoC with significant architectural upgrades compared to the OMAP 4.
While the OMAP 4 integrates a pair of ARM Cortex A9 cores, OMAP 5 features two ARM Cortex A15 cores. TI already announced that it was ARM’s first licensee of the Cortex A15, so the OMAP 5 announcement is not too surprising.

Answer there is ...generally mobile devices such as Smartphones and Tablets...maybe low end...netbooks...

My motivation for posting all of this technical stuff is that ...someone might want to have an idea what is coming next before they sign up for a 2-year plan with a Telecom Carrier for a snazzy little pocket device.
Believing that the life span of a device might mirror that of PC's ...which seems to be somewhere around 5 to 10 years for many on this forum!

OMAP is Texas Instruments naming of their SoC---(System on a Chip) processor.
ARM is the name of the UK Company known as ARM Holdings PLC...stock ticker symbol is ARMH.

As for whose a Nerd - well - you guys all called me a nerd when I had my ham radio hand-held back in the 80’s... Now you’re all driving around with these Bluetooth head-sets and you can’t be parted from them... whose the Nerd Now Dude! ;-)
They might be ahead slightly ahead of the TMSC Fab in Taiwan.
I think they are doing 28 nm chips...now or very soon.

Yep. I could kick myself for not buying TXN in 2009 when they were at $15, and throwing off a 3% dividend to boot. They’re sitting on a mountain of cash too. Thought about it... woulda, coulda, shoulda.
TI is a good company. I use quite a few of their parts (nothing this exotic though).
Well, I don’t have a ‘BlueTooth’ and am not even 100% sure what it is. My cell phone stays turned OFF unless I am making a call — which is NEVER when I am driving/riding.
Of course, I stil have an affinity for the old HP-41CX, have a collection of about 30 Hewlitt-Packard calculators and know how to program them and have used nothing but RPN since 1981. I never cared much for TI’s stuff.
Is it possible to be a half-Nerd?
