Netflix streaming recommendations?
My unused bandwidth ^ | 2/08/2011 | knewshound

I know that a lot of fellow FReepers stream Netflix.

What are your suggestions for movies that may not have received the attention or respect that they deserved?

What are you those gems that are worth watching again?

How about that obscure movie that you tell people they should watch?

Bonus points for links, pics or video of the movie you are talking about.

I'll start;

Firefly - The complete series.

Nothing like a good old fashioned cowboys in space series.  Excellent cast, tight writing and a fan demanded ending.  Highly recommended.

Zombieland

Guns, zombies and jokes.  What more can you ask?  The normally nauseating Woody Harrelson at his redneck best. And seat belts, remember to wear your seat belt.

Centurion

A Euro production that got little notice in the States, it is one of the rare Romans vs Barbarian movies that actually makes you root for the Roman.

Well, those are the first few, what is in your instant queue ?

Cheers,

knewshound

It's silly, but Shaun of the Dead is a good British zombie flick.

For spaghetti-western comedy the Trinity series is good. They call me Trinity, Trinity is still my name etc - (Terence Hill and Bud Spencer).

Sci fi - Outland and Enemy Mine.

IF you suffer from insomnia, then watch The National Parks: America's Best Idea by Kent Burns. Now, don't get me wrong, the visuals are very nice and the information presented is good, but the monotone naration put me to sleep several times in as few as 10 minutes watching it. Good thing I had it on TiVo when I watched it.

The Fastest Indian was one of my favorites.

While She Was Out is good too.

The Girl Next Door is really really dark if you’re in the mood.

We watch NF movies through our WII on the BIG flat screen connected to Dolby 5.1 surround sound. It’s a nice setup. I’m really impressed how NF works through the WII.

The House of Sand and Fog - 4 stars

Breakdown - 4 stars (very intense)

Holy Rollers - 3.5 stars (interesting family struggle, true story)

Woops - I just saw “streaming”. Holy Rollers is streaming. I think “Breakdown” is streaming.

If you like the movie "Shaun of the Dead", there is a great series called "Spaced", which stars most of the actors from the movie plus the same writers and directors.

"Spaced" refers to apartment living, not Sc-Fi, by the way.

This was one funny series.

The Straight Story, hm? I’ll have to check it out.

Lister: I’m gonna get a sheep and a cow and breed horses.
Rimmer: With a sheep and a cow?
Lister: No, with horses and horses!

I haven't checked in a while but if these are not available through streaming, put the DVDs in your queue.

Movies:
Serenity
Sean of the Dead
The Descent
The Truman Show
Blood Diamond
Pan’s Labyrinth
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Cinderella Man
King Arthur
Forrest Gump
... all the Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings movies.

TV:
24 (I think season 8 is now available)
X-Files

Outlander = 13th Warrior + Predator, fun flick.

Winter’s Bone - amazingly realistic performances and a beautiful glimpse into the deep south.

The Name of the Rose - Most realistic dark age movie, Connery’s best imo.

The Secret of Roan Inish - A fantastic Irish folk tale.

Suicide Kings - Gotta love Christopher Walken and this is one of his best roles - title refers to poker not suicide.

The Chronicles of Riddick - Most people have seen the prequel Pitch Black but this one is one of the best sci-fi movies of the decade in spite of the hammy Vin Diesel.

Nicholas Nickleby (2002) - Great Dickens tale displaying how standing up for what is right may cause hardship at first but will pay off in the end.

Man of the House (2005) - Funny feel good movie about a tough conservative cop instilling values in a bunch of cheerleaders who are in witness protection.

Oscar (1991) - Who knew Stallone was such a great comedian? This is one of the funniest movies ever.

Your taste seems different from mine (I like documentaries and classics) so I’ll refrain. However, instantwatcher.com is a great way to browse netflix.

I find the netflix site itself a little convoluted.

"Monk TV series...I just finished watching the last season and it’s depressing to think that there are no more episodes to watch."

We just finished the last episode last night and had the exact same response. Great series. Good writing and interesting characters.

Here are two shows we also enjoyed: (1) Doc Martin (English series about a doctor with a blood phobia) and (2)The IT Crowd (another English screwball comedy)
