Billy Ray Cyrus Scared For Daughter Miley
Fox News ^ | February 15, 2011

Country crooner Billy Ray Cyrus blames Disney's "Hannah Montana" for his daughter Miley Cyrus' issues, angrily saying "the damn show destroyed my family," the New York Post reported Tuesday.

Blaming publicists and Miley's handlers, Cyrus gives an anguished interview in GQ's March issue, where he adds he wishes "Hannah Montana" never happened.

"I hate to say it, but yes, I do. I'd take it back in a second," said Cyrus, who is divorcing Miley's mother, Tish.

Reflecting on Miley's controversial moments -- including seductive photos on the internet, pole-dancing at the Teen Choice Awards, and posing for Vanity Fair draped in a sheet -- Cyrus said he should have been stricter, and accuses her handlers of going too far to promote her, and then using him as the fall guy.

He tells GQ: "Every time the train went off the track ... her people, or as they say in today's news, her handlers, every time they'd put [the blame on] me ... I took it because I'm her daddy ... OK, nail me to the cross.

He could have pulled the plug on “Hannah Montana” at any moment if he saw this going on, but I imagine the paycheck and threats of being sued kept him on the reservation.

Pop culture has a destructive effect if values are not present, especially with a parent who fails in his role as guardian.

I don’t give a rip about celebrity gossip so much as I do about parents who cry about how everyone else is to blame for the ruin of their children.

Parents blame teachers, peers, hollywood, MTV, and even “handlers”, but ultimately they are the ones who will be held accountable not only for how the children were raised, but for who they tried to pawn them off on.

Welp, Billy-boy is on record saying he wanted to be a "friend" to his kids. How's that working fer ya, billy?

Parenting means making tough decisions. You can hope to be friendly, but ultimately parenting is a life time commitment. Like it or lump it, they have all kind of friends throughout life. Just one set of parents.

Besides, it would have been a cold day in hell before I would have let my 16yo daughter hook-up with a 20yo man. And I sure as snake-snot wouldn't have been doing the "setting up."

I don’t understand jumping on the guy.

He made mistakes (some pretty big ones by his account).
He realizes now he made mistakes, and has learned a hard lesson.
He is admitting to the world he made mistakes.

I rarely pull out the “throw the first stone” line from the Bible, as it is almost always misused as an excuse to condone the continuation of bad behavior. But that isn’t the case here. He is saying he regrets what he has done, and want to change things.

To paraprahse: Let he who has displayed perfect parenting skills throw the first stone.

Um. He was perfectly fine with his young daughter POLE DANCING on stage and shooting borderline-porn pics. You shouldn’t need ANY “parenting skills” to know those are BAD, BAD things.

People that watched the show and told their children that Miss Cyrus was a good child, a normal child, an example to follow ....... SHAME. My daughter and son-in-law stayed with me last summer with their 3 children. They watched this show religiously, and when I asked them what they would do WHEN, not IF Miss Cyrus began french kissing Britney Spears on stage, or is caught in a crotch shot getting into a limo drunk. They repeated the spin, her father was very strict. She was from a Christian family, they had great moral values.

Anyone with half a brain could see her fall from miles away.

People, quit worshiping human beings, be it GW Bush, '0', 0prah, Miley or Lady Gaga. They are failed creations, and you falling at their feet only makes them forget it. Not only are millions of people partially responsible for their nature, I would offer the proposition that without the 'fans' these people would have a better chance at happiness.

I vaguely remember an interview I heard him do when they first started this show about how he was proud of his kids and he and his wife didn't want to burden them with a bunch of rules, he let them have their own experiences and that was their parenting technique. I remember thinking to myself, what a cop out on that responsibility, and boy, one day they would be sorry, but by then it will be too late. I wish I could have been my kids best friends while they were growing up, but I had a job to do; a responsibility to them in their youth-to train them up the way they should go. I am so glad I did, cause now, I am friends with all my kids and my marriage is strong; but BOY did they hate me for years, and I am the proud recipient of the worst mother of the year award for 20 years straight LOL.

I agree with you. At least he has seen the light and is speaking up and trying to protect his daughter now. Thank God for that!

He is admitting to the world he made mistakes.

I misunderstood. I thought he was admitting to the world that her handlers made mistakes and that both he and his daughter are the victims.

He doesn’t have anyone to blame but himself.

That said, it’s often so sad watching people who have no idea of the how family life should be. And of course today society scoffs at old ideas.

I have been mentor to many young folk who don’t understand why their families and relationships “go south”. When you bring the small things to their attention, they look at you like deer in the headlights. They just don’t “get it”.

For instance, I taught my sons to not even drive alone with a young girl in the car. That can be a disaster in so many ways.

It seems the fastest way to turn a nice girl into a gutter trash club ho is to make them a Disney star.

Congratulations to you, what you have accomplished is equivalent to cold fusion outside of laboratory conditions. IOW VERY HARD, and most people don’t believe it. I am still “worst parent in the world” to my 3 youngest. They are quite grown up, but still want to be worshiped as nearly all children are in the narcissistic manner of American culture. They were raised by my wife, with my input on weekends. I was undercut at every corner, and am ashamed to say I played the “friend” to them for far too long. Buying them cars, getting them out of jams, and in general spoiling them rotten. The oldest 2 girls turned out completely different, as I treated them in a normal way, but far from the life of two divorced parents trying to “one up” for love.

from the article:

Talking about Miley's 18th birthday party at LA bar Trousdale, Cyrus said: "You know why I didn't go? Because they were having it in a bar. It was wrong. It was for 21 years old and up ... all them people, they all wanted me to fly out so that then when all the bad press came they could say, 'Daddy endorsed this stuff.' I started realizing I'm being used."
Then photos surfaced of Miley smoking the legal herb salvia from a bong. Cyrus, who gave the interview to GQ's Chris Heath five days after the photos emerged, said he had not spoken to Miley since, but confronted one of her handlers: "They told me it was none of my business."

I agree, he seems to be taking a stand. So, in that I can and will pray for him and his family. In fact, that is my duty.

Dad was co-star in the series. He had plenty of opportunity to guide the kid, and fell down on the job (as, truth be told, have most of us).

The few episodes of HM I watched (out of curiosity) seemed pretty innocent, and had little morals (as in moral of the story) like don’t lie to people, don’t be cruel, listen to your parents, etc.

Seems like BRC stopped being dad too soon, more’s the pity.
