Survival Kits For Our Upcoming "Future"
3/7/11 | Me

Posted on 03/07/2011 2:55:46 PM PST by NoGrayZone

I know it has been posted before, but stupid me didn't bookmark it.

There was a survival site I was interested in to buy my survival kit. It included food, water, a tent, first aid kit, a crank radio that also charged up cell phones, battery free and water purification tablets and I believe a "warming sleeping bag".

I know FReepers are stocking up for the bad things coming our way.

Can anyone point me to a reliable source, in which they have used, that I could purchase such a kit from?

I had it bookmarked, but my computer got an ugly virus and I had to restart it from day one in order to get rid of it....therefore losing all my valuable info!

Ramon Noodles make you VERY thirsty with all that salt. I am just looking to sustain myself and my 2 cats for how ever long we can.

If there is no heat, I need a tent with a sleeping bag that will keep us warm. And of course food and water to survive.

A good book (and entertaining) to read is Hawke’s Green Beret Survival Manual.

I dehydrate veggies - cabbage, carrots, onions, celery then vacuum pack them together - a little beef jerky chopped in hot water and you have soup!

Hawke says in his book though that you can’t survive without killing things and eating them. So you must practice that. It doesn’t come easily.

Buy guns. A pistol, a .22 rifle, a 12 ga. shotgun, and an evil assault rifle.

And lots of ammo for each.

"and an evil assault rifle."

I recomend an AK74 which you can get along with 2160 rounds of 5.45 for just over $600.00.

Kartographer suggests an AK74 and there is nothing wrong with that choice. But I prefer western firearms. The AR-15 is a great choice and the direct competitor with the AK74. Ammo is a bit more expensive but it is much more widely available. I can even buy it at the local Wal-Mart.

If you want a lot more stopping power, the go for the ever classic M1A (a civilian version of the M14) or the Free World’s Right Arm (FWRA) aka the FAL. Both shoot very common .308 Winchester ammo and are very good rifles.

If you have those stupid magazine restrictions in your state, then get the greatest battle implement ever devised; the M1 Garand. They are a great buy and you can get a service grade (functional with a good barrel but definitely used) for a mere $595. The 8 round clip is legal in all states and with a little practice you can easily put 30-40 aimed shots downrange.

P.S. the M1 Garand takes .30-06 ammo although you can’t use just any .30-06 in it.

I recommend for the following reasons:

1. Cost both of weapon and ammo.
2. Easy of operation and ease of cleaning.
3. Take alot of abuse and still keep firing.
4. Tumbling action of the rounds. Taliban can them ‘posin bullets, because of the wounds it makes.
5. It’s low recoil makes it easy for anyone to use.

Don’t get me wrong the AR is one fine weapon, but I can get a AK74 and the 2180 rounds for the cost of a low end AR and at less than 10 cents a round I can afford to shoot it often.

They make rather good camping water filters that are preferable to going tablet alone.

A good source of water is priority #2. Being well armed is priority #1 - otherwise anything you have you won’t have for long. Including your groovy water filter.

Use the links but also think down the road. What do you need? Think it through. Each person has a different situation.

General guidelines.

1. Food and water
2. Shelter
3. Firearms and LOTS of ammo
4. more food
5. Barter items
6. crank radio
7. fuel either for a generator or to cook with
8. medical supplies
9. hand tools
10. FRiends.

My wife and I have ridden out 8 hurricanes together. Haven’t had a problem because we were prepared. Given what is potentially coming down the road, we have not gotten out of hurricane mode. We shall see what happens.

Looks like all the best links have already been posted. I like the Ready Store... Lots of great things there... Great water storage solutions. Freeze dried stuff is also a fantastic solution for a long term survival store. Expensive, too.

But one thing that's often overlooked is the fact that there are lots of cheap things that keep practically forever and you don't have to get them from a high-priced specialty store. For instance, rice: Keep it clean and dry and it'll keep for many, many years. Honey in sterile jars really does last practically forever. A few others are listed here --> http://stilltasty.com/articles/view/35. Not a lot, but it'll save you some coin.

You could buy all the survival food and gear available/imaginable to prepare for an emergency situation, and yet still not survive an “anarchy environment”.

What skill do you have, that I don't, that we can trade for our mutual benefit?

Because I/anyone could easily take whatever stockpile you have accumulated, yet can't/won't forcibly defend.

Survival under anarchy is many more degrees of difficulty over taking care of yourself and family for a few weeks after a natural disaster, like Katrina and New Orleans.

Texas won't take you in, and there will be no $2000.00 FEMA checks, or hotel vouchers, to tide the murderous moochers over until they find another source of steady income.

These kits really only scratch the surface of what you're going to need. Also, you have to be very thoughtful so that you don't go purchasing things you're not going to need.

My recommendation is that you cover food and water first.

For food I recommend you learn about packing rice and beans in vacuum-sealed mylar bags.

Gosh, I'm working on a book that covers all this. Maybe I can make a partial version of the book available for download just to help folks get prepared (I've been studying the subject for a while now).

If I had to recommend three things to you they would be:

1. Learn about vacuum-packing beans and rice in mylar and storing them in food grade plastic buckets (videos available on YouTube - just search on 'mylar').

2. Learn about the use of calcium hypochlorite for water purification. Also, the little portable Katadyne water filter is truly excellent if you've got a budget for it. Also get 1 or 2 rain barrels set up.

3. Put back as much as you can by way of first aid. Especially antibiotic ointments. Also, read the following page closely: http://www.survivalblog.com/2010/07/a_doctors_thoughts_on_antibiot.html
