A new vent that opened Saturday on Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano continued to erupt yesterday, throwing lava 80 feet into the air.
The fissure opened up after Puu Oo crater collapsed on Saturday, sending up a giant plume of ash. The crater and the new vent nearby are in a remote area about 10 miles east of the Jagger Museum in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The fissure now measures 1.4 miles long, with lava continuing to erupt up and down the vent.
This development is considered part of the larger volcanic eruption that began in 1983, and has been continuing ever since. Because of the eruption, officials closed roads and eastern trails around the park until further notice.

I’ll guess that the volcano’s lava flow went right through one of the State of Hawaii’s birth certificate record repository for the years 1955 - 1965, destroying everything in its wake.
Heatin’ up over here on the East Rift Zone, Islander7. Are you getting any of our fumes over there in central Oahu?
We had trades today, but the last week or so has been awful. I’m a respiratory therapist at a hospital in central Oahu. We have been overrun with respiratory patients. VOG is very bad for asthmatics and COPD folks.
I’ve actually walked near that vent (which has apparently collapsed) and had my sneakers melt while running away from vog after the wind changed direction. Most exciting vacation of my life! I’d do it again.
The vent is at the 2000 ft elevation. The dramatic pictures show lava flowing a short distance and then going underground into a huge crack.
Vog is no worse than usual in Kona, just farking up the viz a bit. Nobody we know that has respiratory issues, still think that has more than a bit of BS/psychosomatic air about it.
Your observation on the medical effects of lava ejection reminded me of an article years ago on the 79 A.D. Vesuvius eruption where the author speculated that probably more people were killed in and around Pompeii by heavier-than-air poisonous volcanic gas than were buried by lapilli and and the nonmolten rubble which engulfed the city.
Puu Oo? Uh oh.
