Federal prison inmates are working for $0.23 to $1.15 per hour manufacturing parts for propulsion, guidance, and targeting systems of Lockheed Martin’s (LMT) PAC-3 guided missiles. They also make cable assemblies for the McDonnell Douglas/Boeing (BA) F-15, the General Dynamics/Lockheed Martin F-16, Bell/Textron’s Cobra helicopter, as well as electro-optical equipment for the BAE Systems Bradley Fighting Vehicle’s laser rangefinder. I've heard that most federal prisoners are Illegals. Your thoughts?

In the federal prison system, there are quite a few factories under UNICOR, prison industries. I used to work for a company that supplied parts to UNICOR to build the SINCGARS radio.

I have been to the UNICOR HQ in Wash DC and have viewed the workmanship, it is high quality. As far as prisoners doing assembly work on flight hardware, you need not worry. First, the finished product is inspected many times over (in process and final) and second, the indivuduals soldering a diode on a PC board have no idea how the part functions in the system, anymore than the line worker at any defense assembly plant know this information. These are complex systems with rudundant circuits and even the individual design engineers don’t understand the complete system.
