So I go in for an interview, everything is going good. It was for an IT help desk in an office. The interviewer asks me a lot of questions, and asks do you smoke? I said yes. She immediately says, I can't give you the job then. This is in Oregon. I looked up laws and there is a statute where companies cannot use smoking as a consideration when hiring, they can only ban smoking at work. Any advice would be great. Thanks! Ooops, almost forgot. Long time Lurker, looking to meet some new FRiends.

“Don’t let the lobbyists win” should be the rallying call of Barack Obama to congress when he unveils wide-ranging measures aimed at curbing gun violence. Following the shooting of 27 people, including 12 children, at a school in Newton Connecticut at the end of last year, the gun debate has been at the top of most people’s discussion list and congress has to seriously consider the measures Obama is set to propose – similar to those passed in New York on Tuesday. In addressing these measures, congress cannot let powerful lobbying groups such as the NRA sway them with various...

I saw something today that upset and deeply disturbed me. I was walking past my son's bedroom, where he spends all his time on his computer playing those damn games of his. I stopped when I heard the sound of Wayne LaPierre's voice as he gave his speech about the Newtown massacre. I was surprised my son, who is just 14, was getting involved in anything political, but I was glad he was exposing himself to the right people. I opened the door, intending to tell him how proud I was, when the image on the screen stopped me cold....

I am against ObamaCare, due mainly to it's uninvited intrusiveness into the well being of every American presently born, and then some. At the same time, I will say there are instances when it is appropriate to take and utilize government services, especially when one has been an employee of the government at some time in their life. That said, I am so glad to have health insurance through the govt. I served in the Navy back in the Carter/Reagan years. I began on a wooden (yes, wooden!) Minesweeper in Charleston South Carolina, 174 feet in length, and finished my...

Well, yesterday I discussed a liberal website called Outside Asylum, and my experience with it. For me, the best websites for political discussion are neither conservative or liberal, but unbiased. There's nothing more boring then talking to like minded people, but a website that can have a dialog between opposing minds without resorting to name calling. I found a huge website that everybody should know about, it covers everything from your hometown and state, science, religion and politics. As long as you follow their rules, you can have a good entertaining discussion. I use a different monikar there, but it's...

Help. I'm not on suicide watch ... I'm not depressed. But I've never been so tired in my life. I've never fought as hard, been so careful, been so rational. I made a rational life my foundation, and I just had it shoved into my heart and head. I really, really, really really really don't get it. This is crazy. ... not just the election ... it was already crazy. I'm the first to say this doesn't belong. I'd be surprised if this get's posted, and I'll probably be on watch for a month. Does anyone out there just sometimes...

American jurisprudence: Fair, reasonable, following the rule of law and delivering the best chance for justice anywhere, right? Well, how about a Texas district court case in which there are allegations a judge threatened a participant, ordered that his assets be seized, told him he was not allowed to hire defense counsel and then pronounced he had the full power of the Navy, Army and Marines to enforce his will? Those are the allegations contained in a case pending before the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that – by the description of a volunteer attorney working on arguments –...

Hi everyone-- I'm a longtime lurker of FR and just signed up to get your feedback about a question I am sure many of us are asking ourselves. As a lifelong conservative, I am concerned about the possibility (probability?) of Mitt Romney receiving the GOP nomination for president next year. Many of my friends are convinced Romney will win the nomination, but I am very concerned that if he were to get into office, he would not stand up for the conservative policies we desperately need after the past four years. I want Obama out of office more than anything,...

Karl Denninger was one of the founders of the Tea Party back just a few years ago when some concerned conservatives wanted to fire back at the government for what they said was unjust practices. Today, similar sentiments are being echoed by the Occupy Wall Street movement. Is it right to make comparisons between the two groups? Denninger says that, yes, to some degree the comparisons are indeed accurate. The Occupy movement, however, can learn from some of the mistakes that he says the Tea Party succumbed to. “The problem with protests and the political process is that it is...

I just started as a student in a college course called American Government. The textbook is extremely slanted and this version was obviously updated after the mid-term elections in order to rouse up the young vote for Obama in 2012. The target audience of this textbook is 18-25 years-olds (the main age bracket of college students who would be taking an introductory/transfer political course), and for many of them this may be their first exposure to current events in politics. The following excerpt is one example of how the textbook portrays the unappreciative, angry tea party and the extremely productive...

Perry's announcement speech got positive coverage, but the media's approach has been growing increasingly negative. Perry has been very visible, voluble, and controversial, and the media have been portraying him as something verging on a loose cannon. One example was his response to a question about whether President Obama loves his country. Perry said the questioner would have to ask Obama--which left the impression that Perry has doubts about the president's patriotism. Another example came yesterday, when Perry called global warming "a scientific theory that has not been proven and from my perspective is more and more being put into...

What has our country become, but a degenerate society that praises degeneracy? We allow our children and even ourselves be defiled by Hollywoods vision of "morality", which is immorality! We allow movies to portray sexual acts. We allow mindless, Godless TV shows like Jersey Shore and the Cardashians be the norm of our society! We allow gays to cavort in the streets with their disgusting chosen lifestyle as if it were normal! We allow the unbelievers to trash our religion because of their mortal fear that we may be right in our convictions! Nevermind that our compassion allowed them the...

I went to a well known bank in the area today to do some business. The bankteller, maybe 20, had a huge hickie on her neck. I found it repulsive as she went out of her way to make it obvious. A mature thing would have been to wear a scarf, but then again I think she may have been about 12 based on that measuring scale. I contemplated on whether or not to talk to the manager. Don't know what was worse her attitude or the hickie?

TX governor panders to 'The Race' Chad Groening - OneNewsNow - 7/21/2010 5:20:00 AMThe head of a grassroots borders enforcement organization says it's completely inappropriate for Texas Governor Rick Perry to speak to a radical Hispanic organization that supports granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. The Republican governor recently addressed a crowd of 1,800 members of the National Council of La Raza, which calls itself the largest Hispanic civil rights organization in the United States. Critics, however, point out that La Raza means "The Race," and claim the organization is nothing more than a Hispanic supremacist organization. One of...

JERUSALEM – Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu is endorsing the Mexicans’ demand for a future state of Aztlan based on the borders that existed before the 1847 Mexican War, in a move that will likely infuriate America. The U.S. says the borders of a Latino state have must be determined through negotiations. In a speech outlining Israeli policy in Meso- and North America, Netanyahu on Thursday sided with the Mexicans’ opening position a day ahead of a visit to Washington. U.S. residents are vehemently opposed to returning to the 1847 borders. The battle of borders in the Middle Southwest is...

Do any of you conservatives actually believe that Our Hero Barack Obama is actually saddened and deeply concerened over the tornatic destruction in the south? Remember when he came to save a black man in the Blue Of State of Massachusetts over the Cambridge Police Department acting "STUPIDLY"? and Where was Obama when Kentucky got nailed with Ice Storms? When Ohio polls showed that Obama's approval tanked to 40(ish)per-cent,he threw a few billion at them to buy back the votes. And this week the south gets hammered with intense tornadoes, mass destruction&deaths. What do you think? Is Obama secretly laughing at...

Mitt Romney, my personal favorite front-runner for 2012 on our side just performed a rare *suuuuuhuuckification* on the Hugh Hewitt radio show this afternoon in Hewitt's second segment. By congressional action, seniors lean upon younger workers to keep their perceived ‘entitled’ pension benefits coming. This 'backward lean' is the very 'ponziness' of the debacle because the youngest group has no one to lean upon, hence they will be defrauded. The crucial problem is that our government has enacted socialistic and immoral institutions into law such as Social Security and Medicare, which are cloaked in many high-moral sounding themes. But if you are a great grandchild (or later) of the 1930's New Deal era, you will grievously and forever be a dining table server at the Ponzi Scheme Banquet...

Federal prison inmates are working for $0.23 to $1.15 per hour manufacturing parts for propulsion, guidance, and targeting systems of Lockheed Martin’s (LMT) PAC-3 guided missiles. They also make cable assemblies for the McDonnell Douglas/Boeing (BA) F-15, the General Dynamics/Lockheed Martin F-16, Bell/Textron’s Cobra helicopter, as well as electro-optical equipment for the BAE Systems Bradley Fighting Vehicle’s laser rangefinder. I've heard that most federal prisoners are Illegals. Your thoughts?

This video is absolutely amazing. We are approaching 10 years ago that this happened. When this happened there were no Ipods, Ipads and blockbuster was still dominated by VHS. We did not have flatscreen tv's and cell phones with plain with very little features. This video is starting to look old and dated even though our memories are rather vivid of these events. We do question whether we have done the right things pre these events, post the events and have we collectively lost a little bit of our innocence in the process. It feels quite ugly and raw but...

Fred informed us on March 2 of his intention to resign from the station. To be clear, at no time has WMAL told Fred that he was not allowed to discuss his views on Islam over the air. In fact, he has done so on numerous occasions. Further, WMAL has not been contacted by any organization seeking to restrict his broadcasts. Bryan...

Deep in the hearts and minds of the liberal media and the left lie an unspoken truth: both know that Sarah Palin’s so-called “crosshair map” nor the “vitriol rhetoric on the radio and television” (and by that they mean the rhetoric emanating from conservative radio and Fox News) in any way contributed to Saturday’s massacre in Tucson. Thus, their repeated attempts to link the two is no more than a cynical, politically motivated exercise meant to marginalize popular conservative voices and halt the growing and, as evidenced by the mid-term elections, politically powerful Tea Party movement. However, their ultimate goal...

Sorry if I'm not allowed to post this sort of thread, but I'd rather ask direct questions than interpret answers to other questions an apply them to my own. I'm from the UK and for school work over the holidays I've got to find and explain/counter arguments for and against a political issue from another country, and I know that healthcare reform is a big one in America at the moment so I picked the easy one. I've had good experiences with our NHS, and without it I would either be dead or my family would be deeply in debt...

The fed demands a bank to remove Religious symbols and Christmas symbols, because why??? Specifically, the feds believed, the symbols violated the discouragement clause of Regulation B of the bank regulations. According to the clause, "...the use of words, symbols, models and other forms of communication ... express, imply or suggest a discriminatory preference or policy of exclusion." The feds interpret that to mean, for example, a Jew or Muslin or atheist may be offended and believe they may be discriminated against at this bank. It is an appearance of discrimination.

Perhaps the most serious and terrifying threat against our nation and the world is a danger about which most Americans likely know little or nothing. That threat is of an electromagnetic pulse—or EMP—attack. The Heritage Foundation has released a bone-chilling report which analyzes in detail what an EMP attack is and the horrific effects it would have on our country, and it gives important recommendations for guarding our nation from such an attack. This report is one you should read, and it ought to be required reading for our government and military leaders and all those who run our critical...

Dear Glenn Beck, I recently read the free Kindle sample of Broke, your latest effort to contribute to the pubic dialogue regarding the direction of our nation. Your advice is timely and necessary, if somewhat obvious. You have successfully established, with historical examples, that debt is bad, that having money is preferable to not having money, and moreover, that it really sucks that our country no longer has any money. With these three points I stand behind you one hundred percent, even if I wasn't quite willing to buy the remaining ninety-five percent of your book. As you advise your...

Hello fellow freepers. I am a newbie as a poster, though have lurked since the very first edition of FR. My husband and I are avid fans and we live life on the road in our RV.
