My health food store trip...

Posted on 03/15/2011 12:42:13 PM PDT by djf

Just got back from the health food store.

I went to get some Xylitol. Xylitol is a natural sugar that helps with sinus infections, that sort of thing.

Phone was ringing off the hook. Gal behind the counter was automatically answering "Sorry, we're sold out"...

Anybody guess what people were wanting?

Not to disparage the health food store industry but I’ve always noticed that the people who own/work in health food stores are in dire need of protein and some sun.( and a little make-up, for the women )

A hundred years ago, when the soil was still pretty fortified and people ate fish on Fridays, I probably would have agreed with you.

But not anymore.

I dunno. I go to the health food stores around here for stuff for my wife and these folks look pretty pasty and thin.

My brother, who lives between two nuclear reactors called this AM to ask if I was aware stores are selling out of iodide pills. I asked if he had bought any, and he (a liberal - not buying into the liberal media/press hype) said he has no intent to do so.

Here's a couple of articles that made me wonder what happened to these pills?

Post office buys pills in case of nuclear blast

Snip: 2002 The U.S. Postal Service is purchasing 1.6 million doses of potassium iodide pills to protect its employees against thyroid cancer in the event of a nuclear explosion or meltdown.

Taking a cue from the anthrax scare a year ago, the postal service is spending nearly $293,000 to give its 750,000 employees the opportunity to have two days' worth of potassium iodide tablets waiting for them at work.

County ready to give out KI pills, potassium iodide protects the thyroid from radiation. Handout begins next month (local)

Snips: August 2002 Oswego County has nearly 113,000 potassium iodide pills set aside to be given to residents who live within 10 miles of its three nuclear plants.

In September, the county will begin distributing the pills, one per person, to the estimated 42,000 residents in the 10-mile zone. Stockpiles of pills…..

Natural air fresheners for their Subarus? You can’t swing a dead skunk at our natural store without hitting a Subaru.

I don't know if we need to start a thread on this. I am not making this up. I live in Illinois Chicago Suburbs called CVS was told they were out and were out of prescription form.

An acquaintance of mine was downstate in far south rural Illinois was told by a pharmacist that "The United States Government has taken full control of the potassium iodide pills in the United States and every pharmacy, health food store, ect... was instructed to pull the product off the shelves.

Which Government Official would have the power to make such a dictatorial decision?

With NO MEDIA COVERAGE!!!

Yeah if any pharmacists can verify this than we have a story we can pass on to Drudge, WND or someone for crying out loud!

How is the government able to take all of the potassium iodide off all of the shelves and demand that they receive the entire stock!!!!!!!!

This is an insane over reach of power!

If we can verify the info from a FReeper pharmacist than we can see about changing the title of your thread to make this the MAIN THREAD regarding the government confiscating the entire US supply of Potassium Iodide!!!

I've never seen a more insane, out of control government in my entire life! This is a dictatorship we lost our Republic if the Government can confiscate a vitamin from every store in the nation and demand that not one more sale of the pill is made!

Table salt, even if it claims to have iodine often has none, the american iodine intake is incredibly low to almost non existant. When we grew iodine was in bread and all kind of things, now they use bromide which tricks the thyroid but in the end doesn’t work the same and is behind a ton of health issues in this country.

People in the U.S. consume an average 240 micrograms (µg) of iodine a day. In contrast, people in Japan consume more than 12 milligrams (mg) of iodine a day (12,000 µg), a 50-fold greater amount.

The dose required to truly protect a person from radiation (at least in the thyroid area) is 130-mg.

If anyone here things they are safe because they eat shrimp a few times a week or plan to add a little extra salt they are truly delusional.

The Japanese get thier iodine from Kelp mostly, which also is heavily contaminated with Arsenic. Most brands of iodine you get at health food store are from kelp and have healthy doses of arsenic. Also, they are too low in amount to truly protect a person.

I recommend, if you need to keep some around, Iodoral, it’s not from kelp, and potent enough to protect you, and it’s production is controlled.

Abt 1/4 tsp Xylitol, 1/4 tsp sea salt, and enough warm water to fill a 4 oz or so spray bottle.

It’s supposed to help quite a bit with ear infections as well, I don’t have ear problems but sometimes in the spring my sinuses act up a bit, and it seems to work way better than plain store-bough nasal spray.

I’m somewhat divided on the issue and here’s why:

If there was a need for it (AND AS OF RIGHT NOW THERE IS NOT!!!) but IF there was, then it would be unavailable or you would have to wait for the governments “permission” to get some.

OTOH, I’m somewhat surprised that we haven’t already heard stories about kids getting admitted to hospitals with acute Iodine poisoning because their crazy half-hypochondriac mom OD’d them on it because she basically didn’t have a clue what she was doing.

It’s not something you want to mess with or take lightly.
