I have quarts of antiseptic Iodine solution and tincture of iodine, so I don’t sweat it. Plus I eat alot of shrimp and seafood.

But there were obviously tons of people who don’t...

I have a bottle of Potassium Iodate, KIO3,which is supposed to be safer. My knowledge of such things is pretty low, so I can’t be sure it really is safer.
