St. Patrick's Day surprise: Study finds relatives who share Obama's Irish ancestry; some kin unhappy
NYDailyNews ^ | March 17, 2011 | Philip Caulfield

A new study claims that President Obama has 28 living relatives who share his Irish ancestry, but some of the newly discovered kin aren't eager to share a pint with him.

In the study, released to The Associated Press by family history website Ancestry.com, genealogists traced the descendants of about two dozen passengers who came to America from Ireland on the ship Marmion in March 1850.

Thus giving a new spin to the term “black Irish.”

Yes, and I am sure I am not the only one who has heard that the Irish were nothing more than ....... turned inside out.

BTW my name starts with “O’C” so I can ‘safely’ relay that tidbit.

Nice they can find out that he has 28 living ‘Irish’ relatives, including 1 Vietnam Vet but can get no clue as to how he obtained a ‘dead guy’s’ Social Security Number - or at least one that was issued to a ‘dead guy’ at one time.

"Redheads in Ireland are a distinct minority. Take one hundred people from Ireland and ninety-two will have brown or black hair, six will be blondes, and two will have red hair."

I didn't realize that redheads were so rare in Ireland. My grandmother on my mother's side was blue eyed with auburn hair and the surname of Kelly. She married my grandfather, a dark eyed, dark haired man of french descent, in the city of New Orleans. Of course, as it happened all of their children were dark eyed brunettes who looked french. Sadly, no redheads of any sort in the family since then.

“I’ll take Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations over, ohh, say Kwanzaa, Cinco de Mayo, United Nations Day, or any other bullsh*t made-up lefty-lib holiday anytime.”

Some can take even St.Patrick’s Day too far.

My daughter is not yet 5, but she knows very well what we celebrate on St. Patrick’s Day, and why the shamrock is the symbol of both St. Patrick and Ireland. And we’re not even Irish!

My auburn hair and green eyes came from the Welsh side.

Your hair and green eyes (lucky you), are glorious.
I've a neighbor who has a very nice shade of red/auburn hair. Though never as long as yours she has lately been wearing it in what I term a 'Pelosi'. (Cut like Nancy P's). I despise it and cringe when I see it. Good thing we don't speak to one another anyway!

From the article:

“Obama found out years ago that an ancestor, Falmouth Kearney, fled the potato famine in Ireland and was brought to the United States on the Marmion when he was 19.

Obama’s mother, Ann Dunham, was a descendant of one of Kearney’s daughters and a man named Jacob Dunham.”

Remember, if you go back 5 generations, you will find 32 ancestors, and only one of them is likely to have the same surname as you.

“...Some can take even St.Patrick’s Day too far...”

Generally, an extreme exception, rather than the rule.

The picture of yourself in Viking garb is nice. You're very pretty*.

* I'll deny posting that if ever you cut your hair in a style similar to that of Nancy Pelosi.

>>My auburn hair and green eyes came from the Welsh side.

Interesting, my grandma had red hair, but I believe that came from her Scottish father. She and my dad had gray eyes. I have curly dark brown hair but my beard used to have streaks of red through it (now it has streaks of white where the red was) and hazel eyes.

American mutt here, proud of it. Irish, Mexican, Scottish, Spanish background in about equal proportion.

It was Princess Letizia of Asturias (wife of the next King of Spain) on the left, First Lady Carla Bruni of France on the center, and Michelle Obama on the right. And, true, one of the three didn't go with the others:
