Very cool! When I went to grad school in Glendale, AZ it was when the first squadron of F15’s was based at Luke. We used to drive up in the hills overlooking the base and watch them do touch and goes. One time one of the pilots, for squirts and giggles I suppose, took off and then pulled the nose up and hit afterburner. Gone in what seemed like 2 seconds.

I used to take my grandsons out there every year (before Iraq changed it all to a every-other year event). After sitting in a non-moving traffic jam two years ago, with no where to go or move, I will never head out there again. It used to be a ton of fun, and we all really wanted to see the F-22 demo that took place in 2009.

Back in about 1980, an air show at the Iowa Air National Guard hanger (Des Moines municipal airport) featured a fly in by a British Vulcan bomber. The flight crew were part of the 44th Rhodesia Squadron. The crew and airplane had been visiting SAC at Omaha and the local radio stations broadcast the moment it left and projected its arrival time so we were all out in our back yards, watching for it. The big bird's captain overshot the runway on his first approach and had to make a "go around," laying four black trails of smoke over the downtown. He got it right on the second try. We were within earshot of the captain's executive officer when he asked if the captain had any trouble with the cross wind runway. "No problem sir...no problem," when the capt's reply.
