The U.S. Army has been forced to apologise over what they have deemed as 'repugnant' photographs of grinning American soldiers standing over bloodied and partially-naked Afghan bodies they had allegedly killed.
The pictures were published by German news organisation Der Spiegel and were among 4,000 they have obtained.
Meanwhile, commanders in Afghanistan are bracing themselves for a public backlash and possible riots over the 'trophy' photographs, especially since it has been alleged that the Afghan civilians were unarmed and innocent.
Senior officials at Nato's International Security Assistance Force in Kabul have compared the pictures published by the German news weekly to the images of U.S. soldiers abusing prisoners in Abu Ghraib in Iraq which sparked waves of anti-U.S. protests around the world.
It is feared that these pictures - which show the aftermath of the murders at the hands of a rogue U.S. Stryker 'kill team' - could be even more damaging as the trials of the 12 accused men are currently under way in Seattle.

Digital Cameras are ubiquitous and so is the worldwide transmission and viral dissemination of acquired photography and video. Couple that with the attention-whore ethic of our Internet culture, and you end up with this. It’s not like this has never happened before. We just know about it now and our military is forced to apologize for it.
From what I understand, they have confessions and an otherwise solid case against that group. And I don’t think the UK papers have the fascination with “alleged” that US papers do anyway.
The thing to remember is that the soldiers who did this have been arrested and are being tried...and several are staring at a firing squad, rightfully so if they are duly convicted. Muslims commit atrocities like this as a matter of course. When American soldiers are caught doing it, they’re arrested, investigated, tried by law, and punished accordingly. There is no moral equivalence.

I wonder if the photos of the dead is a common thing in order to I.D. them? And it turned into this goulish scene by a few. Although what is up with this one, where the two guys seem to be bound at their hands and feet and dead?!
They were obviously tortured before death. And the guys that did it either need a stiff prison sentence or a firing squad. There is killing terrorists, and then there is killing anything that moves/torturing them and dropping them in a ditch.
