I was planning on backing up my laptop this past weekend so I would have backups of all my vital data--my ping list being a part of that. However, my laptop power supply decided on Friday that 8 years was long enough to labor, and it died.

Eight years is pretty good. What brand is it?

So, in other words, no ping list, right?

Oh well, these things happen.

It's a Sager. The machine is still running pretty good. Once the power supply gets replaced, I'll be up and running again with no problems.

I bought it in 2003, thinking it will be a 10-year machine:

  1. laptop form factor
  2. Desktop 3.2Ghz CPU
  3. 17" screen
  4. 1G Ram
  5. 2 160G HDD, with HW RAID available
  6. DVD writer
I bought it in 2003. That kind of tech was just making its appearance.

My next 10-year machine will be a real monster. :)

That’s what I meant - the FF4 - I read up on it first and a few sites were saying that the RC2 is the FF4 that they are rolling out - it’s out today.

Seems faster - I am on an elderly PC - An HP pavilion from ‘03

Running nicely on XP Pro right now. Make sure you have XP Service Pack 3 installed with the updates. Firefox 4 RC should function on XP.

I have seen several I7 laptops for under $1000.

I can’t figure out why the mfg’s only put in 4gb of ram when they can handle 8gb, considering the extra 4gb costs about $50.

One HP laptop looked pretty good, except that you had to take it apart just to add ram.

I downloaded it and tried installing it and it said “Must have a newer version of Windows”.

I see others say it works on XP so maybe I’ll try it again.

Just re-downloaded it and this time it installed with no errors or warnings.

Maybe the first download was broken.

Oh, well.

Yep. That's the one I downloaded today.\\

The other one that didn't work was probably the RC or maybe Beta.

This one works fine.

Now If I could only speed up my internet...

Seems like 6mbs would be fast, but I'm always ‘waiting for a response’ from websites.

I’m pretty much an Opera guy. Fast, easy to use, and intuitive.

I used to think they disappeared to. What happens is it only save it once in your bookmark system. I used to put a BM in the regular folder and also in a special folder and would only post in 1 of them.

That may be true, but I had thirty or so links in one folder and I've used those link extensively for the past three years for a specific project
Late last week, I noticed the links in that folder (sorted in alphabetical order) got cut off after the letter C (a subfolder was still there and still intact).
I did a restore from another backed up bookmark file, and ALL the links, A to Z, popped up.

I had a similar situation that turned out to be a bad cable between the router and the PC. Who knew they could fail just sitting there?
Unplug and replug any cables you use, power down any hardware (cable modem, router, etc.,) leave them off for a full 60 seconds then power back up again.
Make sure you don't have any viruses or malware too.

Here are two things for you to speed up the Internet.

Google Chrome (latest addition is great... Just like Firefox). Probably the fastest browser.

http://www.google.com/chrome

Download Accelerator Plus along with Speedbit Video accelerator work great too. You have to pay if you want a premium version. Nevertheless, the free version works great.

Thanks, but I tried all that.

I even put a wireless card in my desktop, and surprisingly it did go a little faster.

But I think the real problem is that the DSL ‘node’ in my area is getting overloaded.

Especially since a couple of new housing projects has gone up.

It seems to run ok first thing in the morning, right up until about 10 am. After that you sit and wait for a response from the server.

Not sure what I can do about it except move closer to the node. But since I own my home, that’s not going to happen.

I’ll just have to live with it, or get Cable..

Give Google Chrome a try.. Last week a new version and it’s fast. I bet it’s faster than Opera.

I should also add that not all sites respond slowly.

Streaming video seems to work fine from most sites and downloads are ok.

But the ISP’s slow response is what is really causing the problem. Even ‘tech support’ from Frontier is useless.

They have the same ‘canned’ solution of removing power from the modem, waiting 30 seconds and reconnecting.

Sometimes it helps. Most times is doesn’t.. And it’s a new modem.
