I Quit!: How do you officially STOP being a Republican? (VANITY)
fwdude | 03/22/2011 | fwdude

I got a solicitation call from the RNC last week and I think I finally got off of their roles as a "card carrying" member. I had donated small amounts in years past, but have forcefully informed them since 2008 that I don't support their candidates and platforms anymore. Anyway, they asked me during the recent call if I consider myself a Republican or a Democrat. I told them "neither."

So they pigeonholed me as an "independent." Does it sound like I'm off the hook?

Not sure. Last one that called me, I kept telling him NO and that if and until they started fighting the Democrats with everything we’ve got they wouldn’t see one more dime from me. And he kept saying but we really need your support. Finally he gave up after what felt like at least 15 minutes of pleading on his part. I don’t remember IF that was BEFORE or AFTER I got the last mailing from them that had on the outside of the little light brown envelope in a red ink a circle with the words PAST DUE. Oh that made me mad. Past due my a**. Argh. IF they call again anytime too soon, they’ll get an earful.

I used to be a donor.

When G.W. went over to the dark side with the Dims during his last term I stopped.

Anything from the GOP goes in the trash since then.

I should have phrased that differently. I don't support many of their candidates and the platforms that they substantively stand for - i.e. beltway Republican values.

I am a staunch Tea Party supporter, and I support conservative candidates (this is what I tell RNC solicitors.) I realize that the TEA Party brand is much too young to stand on its own yet, so they must associate with a major party. I look forward to the happy day when the TEA Party supplants the Republican Party.

“You realize the Tea Party candidates that win in primaries are running as Republicans and are funded and assisted by the Republican party right?”

You coulda fooled me.

“Changing to an unaffiliated will exclude you from voting in the primaries.”

In federal primaries PA as a whole is excluded. The candidates are chosen well before has chance to cast a ballot.

I’m not sure what you mean by “serious influence”, but the primary system is loaded against serious conservatives.

I’m in Texas. We have caucuses after each primary election, but I think you get to vote in either party primary you want.

During the last election cycle, I sent the RNC play money, noting in the replay form that I was sending “Fake money for a fake Republican.”

I love it. It's on my shopping list.

You should have told them that you’re an American sans a party.

Once you give them money tied to a contact method they’ll bug you forever. It’s the nature of beggars. Doesn’t matter what you relabel yourself as, in their book you’ll always be labeled as “can be cajoled”.

I quit being a Republican a couple of years ago, not because I no longer believed in the platform, but because THEY no longer believed in their platform.

Ah, come now... you aren't being harsh enough.
It isn't that the Republican party doesn't believe in it's planks, they do: They fully believe that people will vote for them because they say they'll act on one of those planks.

A good example is when "Second Amendment Support" comes up; how often is the Republican control of Congress cited as the factor in the ending of the Assault Weapons Ban? That ban had a sunset clause so they had to literally do nothing.

Abortion is another one; the Republican-party has had the overturning of Roe v. Wade as a plank for more than 25 years. I'm less than 30, so that's most of my life; and yet the biggest actual step they've done happened just this year: the cessation of funding for Planned Parenthood. {Likely this was spurred on by that sting video, but still it's rather pathetic that even when Republicans had a dominating factor post-11-Sep they didn't even make the symbolic try of proposing a Constitutional Amendment.}

And then there was NY-23 in this last election-cycle where the national Republican-party endorsed the DEMOCRAT candidate over the Tea-Party-member-who-ran-as-a-republican.

In this area the Democrats are more honorable than the Republicans: they at least strive to implement their stated party-planks.

Dress as an elephant then turn around 4 times.....saying, "Arizona, not Oklahoma, what does it matter"... Then skip down a public street three blocks...chanting, "I am not a Republican!!" over and over.

Once you've done that you are officially out.

Just stop voting. It only encourages them.

I do label myself a Republican, but in answer to your question: Since you live in Texas, you were never officially a Republican as we’re an open primary state. There is no such thing as a registered Republican in Texas, so if you don’t want to be a Republican in Texas, it’s as simple as not calling yourself one.

I only gave them money when they somewhat acted like Republicans, but that was years ago. Maybe their fruitless mailings will break their pocketbook.

Mass mailings are cheap. Charities, which is basically what they are, are a lot like Pavlov’s chickens, once they get food once they’ll keep trying.

I’ll give it a try. But doesn’t it have to be during a full moon?

Darn it! Just missed it.

Sorry... if you leave, they’ll have to kill you. You know too much.

Naw, they don't kill 'em, they send them to a tiny village in Wales. And give everybody numbers instead of names.

After you’ve given to them ONCE, you’re on their donor rolls for life, no matter the Party.
