Then there is the “Ban Di-hydrogen Oxide” (H2O) petition. The petition stated that every year thousands of people around the world are sickened or killed by this noxious chemical - and people were lined up to ban water.

This absolutely happens beyond a Youtube joke. Many years back some college kid asked me to sign a petition about something-or-other. I was interested and asked to take a look, only to find it was about legalizing marijuana, nothing remotely related to the story he gave me.
The Man Show went out and got signatures on a petition against women’s sufferage. “Because why should women have to sufferage?”
They got a LOT of signatures before someone literate came along...
