(vanity) OK, I deleted my Facebook account....anyone else do this?

Posted on 03/27/2011 5:55:57 PM PDT by Red in Blue PA

A friend of mine said I "needed" a Facebook account over a year ago, so I tried it out. So I tried it out and found that most people talked about their inane daily activities. Who cares if they are waiting in an airport or doing laundry? Does anyone else hate being connected all of the time? Not to mention the fact that you will be contacted by people you do not want to hear from anymore. And you must respond. Reject them, or just ignore them. Either way, it is awkward.

If you want to talk about something, start a blog.

If you want to contact me, email me.

I still do not understand the fascination with Facebook (or Twitter)...... and I am someone who grew up in a computer.

Was curious how many other people tried it but dumped it. W

LOL. I had some very strange-sounding name invites. It would seem more benign if I hadn't read about the downside of it and how some of my relatives post; a couple are far too attention seeking.

Two of my relatives who are particularly vulnerable because of their circumstancess in life, I did warn, and my warning was heeded to a degree. Concerned posting photos of your children in the public area and other vulnerabilities that may not exist for some.

I understand why it's fun for you, who am I to say? I think I got a lot of that out of my system in my early days on the web and quickly found out if I got any more deeply involved in it, I'd be doing little else. I wasn't that afraid for myself.

It's tempting to go back for one friend who posts almost exclusively there now, but no, he'll get along just fine without me. He's a wonderful photographer, can't live without his camera around his neck, very versatile, but too many nudes are taking up his time LOL. I looked at a couple, saw some artistic merit in some of them, but had enough of it. His other work I just drool over and if I don't have to sign up again on FB to get his new book, I might get it, no it's for kindle, don't want that, monitor is hard enough on my eyes as it is,

It is unique and one of the best ways to find and stay in touch with people; that I will concede. Have fun, sounds like homeschooling, you need some social networking.

Oh yes, I know. Recently when searching something I found one of my posts at the top of a search. It’s true that anything put on the internet is there to find, and anyone can be found by Big Brother if they want you.

Well, on that happy note....good night, all!

My son told me about all the wonderous things, and that I needed a FB account. So, bingo there I was, exposed to the world.

Son shares my name (by a strange co-inky-dink), so first thing was, I suddenly got "friends" on FB. I mean lots of friends! Second thing was the correspondence. I suddenly became the center of the universe for some gal who was a former classmate and was mad at her "other", one of my sons college prof's (gay and hiding behind a skirt) wanted to meet for lunch, and there was going to be a class of 1996 reunion that "everyone" was going to attend and could I possibly be the keynote speaker?

Guess what the third thing was? Bingo - killed FB! Jees, I'm near 70 and wouldn't have exposed myself to this crap when was a teen. Too old to adjust? Yep, thats me!

I know people who are dating and check Facebook to see if the person has changed his status to being in a relationship! That way they know there is a commitment. YES! You heard me right. Lots of people. I also can tell you that Facebook is where a lot of games are played and spying is done by many women to see who he is talking to every day. If the woman is blocked by him on Facebook, he will really be in trouble if they are dating. Everything happens on Facebook before it does in real life now. LOL! That website is causing a lot of divorces per Fox news and I know for a fact it is causing breakups in relationships.

I once had a skeleton FB page (fake name and no other info) just so I could be “friends” with one of my kids who has a music career going. I even deleted that after I found I didn’t need it to view public FB pages. By the way, I was amazed at how many other people with FB accounts used the same fake name as me. (The name was NOT a common name by any stretch, and was actually the birth name of a long-dead, cult-variety movie star.)

I use FB for political activism, i “like” lots of politicians and political people. I post links to political articles, and rebut obvious moonbats with facts and references.

You do not have to accept a friend request, you know, and if someone has inane posts, you can unfriend them, or “hide” the Farmville posts.

All the people talking about stuff that “happens” to them on FB apparently don’t know how to control it, or maybe don’t read the how-to’s.

As for someone taking pictures of you and posting them, well, that’s reality now, not just FB, there’s Orcutt, Myspace, xanga, friendster, photobucket, tumblr, and I could go on.

Only to the ones who should be insulted by it. Whether you are one of those is unknown to me, but make no mistake as to the high level of Luddite sanctimony that seems to infest this site.

If a person chooses not to participate in something like Facebook, that’s fine, but to state that those who do are “cattle” is most definitely insulting to a great number of people, many of whom are undeserving of it.

Thank you for that link, plan to use it.
Tired of messages that someone with a female name I don’t recognize wants to be my “friend”.
I was adventuresome throughout my 20’s, now people I trust who want to hook me up with a winner have my email address.

I unfriended someone (a radio interest pal) when he got upset after I made a post along the lines of “Robert Byrd, a prominent Klansman, has died. I think he was also a Senator” :)
