THEN AND NOW: Scully makes it all special

Jack Norworth, the lyricist of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," never saw a baseball game until years after he wrote the song.

But that's OK. You don't have to see a game to appreciate the game. Just turn on your radio.

Likely, your father took you to your first baseball game. Likely, he tried to explain it. Likely, he failed. Enter Vincent Edward Scully, formerly of the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn, now of Chavez Ravine.

...Come spring, and the baseball cards arrived at the Owl drugstore like swallows returning to Capistrano. "Who's Who In Baseball" showed up on the magazine racks, and a friendly voice resonated on the family Philco.

"It's time for Dodgers baseball," Scully intones.

No winning seasons since ‘97 makes it hard to be a cheerleader.

Going to Cuba makes it even harder.

Very kind coming from a guy from Frisco.
But very true. It was always a pleasure growing up in L.A. listening to either but then we were unaware how bad some others could be.

Also after seeing your about page I’d bet you laughed your rear off when you heard about Bonds former mistress tell of his balls shrinking and getting funny looking and his sexual preformance shrinking after his steroidal use?

LOL.

Correction though to your comments. I live now in the SF Bay area, but I am "from" southern California. I grew up in the LB/Lakewood area, went to CSULB (when Lute Olsen coached there, then Tex Winter).

I hate the Giants, but I did turn into a 49er fan shortly after Georgia had Carol killed!

Come on man,
Just because a former strippers billionaire husband mysteriously drowns in the ocean and she inherits EVERYTHING you go and jump to conclusions.
I grew up in N. Hollywood.
Dad split 4 season tickets to Dodger games with 3 guys he worked with, Third tier first row right above 1st base.
We’d sell world series tickets and it would pay for the next whole year.

"Dad split 4 season tickets to Dodger games with 3 guys he worked with"

That is pretty cool. For me, suppliers to my dad's company comped him a lot of tickets (8-10 games per year), good seats lower level behind the Dodger dugout about halfway up. I saw a lot of big games including: three games during Drysdale's scoreless inning stretch, Koufax (at the coliseum as well as at Dodger Stadium), 'the throw' by Joe Ferguson (against the A's), Yankees and Orioles in the World Series, Manny Mota foul off 12 consecutive pitches before advancing a runner, an inside the park home run by Willie Davis, plus Maury Wills and his stolen bases.

I was pretty lucky, dad was not so much into baseball but new I loved it and so did my Mom, who was with me for many of those games (since I was too young to drive!).

Good memories!

I enjoyed hearing him call an exhibition game last night, Dodgers v. Angels. He always throws in a funny, wry observation of the play. He truly loves this game and all the characters involved in it.

I saw that game on TV, and two things were clear. One, Scully is still the best, at 80+ years. Second, the Dodgers still can't close out a game with Jonathan Oxton and a shoddy 2nd baseman.

When I graduated college I moved to Houston, Texas.
A friend said to me, You’re a baseball fan, choose a date and let’s go to a ball game.
Soooo,
As Nolan Ryan broke Kofax’s record for hitless games I was behing third base, half way up on the bottom tier of the Astrodome yelling “GO BLUE” in to the 9th inning as folks from the upper tiers were throwing cokes down trying to hit me.
I can’t find myself to root any more for the dodgers with this ownership.
Tried the Marlins but their ownership is even worse so I root for Tampa at this point. Go figure.
And it is opening day and the best part is the damn N.Y. Mets have left Port St. Lucie. Good Ridance.

Going to Cuba makes it even harder.

<><><><

Certainly not a popular sentiment here at FR, but the Cuba trip didn’t and doesn’t bother me at all.

We (the US) happily does business with far worse than the government of Cuba. And yes, I’ve heard and debated all the arguments pro and con any number of times, but that’s what I’m left with.

And hopefully this thread is beyond its active time and you will be the only one to flame me :-)

Not me, I'm a Yankees fan.

Brooklyn was doomed when it became a borough of New York City. After that, it was subject to whims and vagaries of the city.

O’Malley was not losing money but the area around the stadium was changing character and he new it was a matter of time before people would no longer feel safe coming to the park. He wanted the city to build a new park and when city council balked he went West. He was following the Giants who had gotten a great deal from SF.

Gross.... I’m so glad I’m not on Bonds’s jury.

I definitely have a "here we go again" feeling about this season, but I didn't expect anything else. Is ANYONE slower on the mound than Big Jon? Good gravy!

Nevertheless, opening day ceremonies planned for tomorrow sound lavish:

****************************************

Pre-game festivities on Opening Day, including the ceremonial first pitch, will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Opening Day in 1981. Grammy Award-winning singer Plácido Domingo will perform the National Anthem and Broadway actor and singer Davis Gaines will perform God Bless America.

Opening Day will be televised nationally on ESPN as the network’s first Thursday Night Baseball game of the season. PRIME TICKET will deliver a special one-hour pre-game show from Dodger Stadium beginning at 4:00 p.m.

Before the National Anthem, the Dodgers will observe a moment of silence for those whose lives were lost as a result of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) have joined together to contribute $500,000 toward earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan to UNICEF. Dodger pitcher Hiroki Kuroda has made a personal donation to the cause and the Dodgers will also collect donations for UNICEF at locations throughout the stadium.

Approximately 136 members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, National Guard, Coast Guard, LAPD and LAFD will unfurl a giant flag on the day during pre-game ceremonies. A Joint Services Color Guard will present the colors and pre-game ceremonies will conclude with a flyover by a B-2 from Whiteman Air Force Base.
