'American Idol’: Why Pia Toscano Was Sent Home (One of the biggest upsets in the show’s history)
Wall Street Journal Entertainment Section ^ | 04/08/2011

Well, if you’re reading about “American Idol” tonight the comments on Twitter, Facebook and just about anywhere you look aren’t pretty.

Some fans are vowing to never watch again and the curse words are flying. That’s because we might have witnessed one of the biggest upsets in the show’s history. Idol darling Pia Toscano was sent home tonight.

The judges looked furious and the sobs were pouring out for this New York contestant. Even the guys on stage looked like they were teary-eyed and everyone look shocked.

Maybe the judges were part of the problem. They have been sugar-coating all of their comments lately, but last night they gave Pia the mildest of criticism. Maybe it was enough to shift the vote, because those were the only negative words of the night. Pia rocked Tina Turner’s “River Deep, Mountain High,” but Jennifer Lopez suggested for her to get to the next level, she should do what Michael Jackson used to do – study the greats. JLo said Jackson used to watch Gene Kelly and Pia should start studying as well.

In past performances, they compared her to Celine Dion, and Mariah Carey, and made comments like “you are the closest star in the American Idol universe.”

But there was always the subtle and not so subtle suggestion that she stop singing ballads. The judges clearly loved her and told her she had the full package, but told her to start owning the stage and making it big. Maybe America listened.

She can sing and is pretty but she was boring week after week. They are looking for a pop star not a ballad crooner.

Boring is right—no personality at all!

American Idol is the perfect illustration of how pathetic our nation has become.

The mere fact that any cares is...ridiculous...at best.

I think anyone who cares about what happens on American Idol is simply expressing their need for a lobotomy-reversal procedure.>/i>

Right on! I'm proud to state that I have never watched this show.

Her voice is perfect. By far one of the best singers ever on AI. But, you need to be an entertainer and have stage presence. Not sure that she came by that naturally. But then again, Carrie Underwood lacked in that department too.

Oh well, now back to the real world

Enthusiasm! several of them are low on enthusiasm and apparent joy and energy during their singing.

It is a vital component. Seems obvious yet still there are some that do not show being real and into what they are singing. The voices are great this time. It is the total package plus likability that usually wins in the end.

I agree totally. She had a beautiful voice but was a snoozer to watch. I don’t understand how many people love Paul either. His voice is different, but not great, and he looks like he could use a few sandiwches!

Not surprised. Have only watched the last two AI shows this year, but last week I thought she did a poor job of interpreting the song,. i.e., she was just hitting the notes and using too much volume. Last night was better on the R&R song, but something about her voice is a little off and usually too loud.

I’m not a fan of armpits either. LOL, that was funny.

To be honest, I did something else when Pia performed. Beautiful - check
Great voice - check
Boring - you betcha.

I can’t believe with all that’s going on in our world, that people would be this upset over a singer on a tv show. The girl had no stage presence, and who in their right mind, would pay to sit through one of her concerts? It isn’t always about selling CDs, you have to sell yourself too at a concert and then there’s merchandising.

She’ll probably be on spokesperson for cosmetics or hair products or something, (the toothpaste commercials belong to Paul) and I’m sure we’ll see her face all over the magazines, but, sell records? Don’t think so.

Carrie Underwood was rather robotic too, but, one could sense a personality underneath the wood. I couldn’t scratch the surface with Pia. Maybe it was there, but, she waited too long to show it.

And week after week, she assumed she’d be there the next week and do whatever the judges told her. I remember Randy saying, “ballads, ballads, ballads.” She was boring him too. He tried to warn her. It isn’t always about one performance, but, most assume she was a frontrunner, and that may not have been the case at all.

I think people were turned off by her snoozefest a couple of weeks ago, and it just caught up with her.

Personality is a big plus. Without that, she’ll go no where except maybe modeling, where she can pose or stand as stiffly as she wants.

I sure wouldn’t waste a dime to buy her music.

What is up with Iggy Pop? If that wasn't a reminder of a bad acid trip from back in the day I don't what is. Oye.

Pia, best voice this year. She let the judges talk her into changing her on stage presence and off she goes. BIG mistake. All you need to do is stand at the mike and sing while looking amazing. You don't have to set the piano on fire or dance around with your shirt off.

As someone else said, Carrie Underwood's shuckin & jivin (my description) wasn't very good either. In fact, I find it embarrassing to watch. When she just stands there and sings from her heart while looking amazing, I melt.

Pia will have a GREAT career, COUNT ON IT.

I stated this from the top 13. Pia was the most complete and ready for prime time performer. None of her performances since have changed my mind.

It is also why I stated she had no chance to win...

I stooped watching American Idol years ago because not the best performer won. The black girl who does the Weightwatcher’s Commercials was far above the one who actually won.
