Maine legalizing switchblades for one-armed people

Maine lawmakers on Wednesday approved legalizing switchblades for people with one arm, moving close to becoming the first state to make such an exception to laws that ban use of the spring-action knives.

Backers of the measure say legalizing switchblades would eliminate a need for one-armed people to be forced to open folding knives with their teeth in emergencies.

The bill to allow amputees and other one-armed people to carry the quick-opening knives cleared Maine's Senate on Wednesday after passing the House on Tuesday, Senate officials said.

Until now, Maine banned the use of switchblades by anyone.

In most states, carrying switchblades is illegal in most circumstances, though owning the knives may be allowed in some states.

I’d give my left arm for one of those.

This is really just a hold over from before the war on drugs when street gangs couldn’t afford real weapons like AK-47’s and the like. Don’t know any self respecting gang-banger that wouldn’t be packing at least one or two guns now days. Should get rid of these laws as they are just another failed attempt at weapon control. Never has worked, never will.

They should have never been illegal in the first place and a cop that enforces such a law falls into the “dumb-ass” or “tool” category.

Inanimate object like knives, guns, ATVs, Jet Ski's, I've even heard mention of certain bumpers on vehicles..... getting blamed for human behavior or vices never makes sense- EVER.

Bad or stupid people make bad choices and the best they can do for the rest of us is not accidentally kill us that day. That's true no matter how much we want to insulate ourselves from their stupidity and/or evilness. Politicians that pander out in front of these issues are frauds. Most of the time they deep down inside even know it's a big lie, but they simply want to gain political momentum be exploiting the mood of the times. Those that enforce those laws are tools. they are the stooges that like some Nazi camp operator “Waz just fallowing orderz.” For the rest of us, realize that everyone has their realm in which they enjoy themselves may that be on a lake with a jet ski, shooting a deer, or climbing a mountain trail with their ATV, flying a plane, rock climbing........... Don't be so short sighted to think that it's just the “other guy” being shat upon and because it doesn't affect you it's OK.

Inanimate objects are not mind control devices that make people any more stupid or evil than they already are. Go down this road and before long certain kitchen knives become illegal as in Scotland (UK).

That's why they should simply carry guns....you don't need your teeth, and they work really good with one arm.

Every emergency isn't a self defense situation.

I'd hate to see these folks trying to shoot their way out of a stuck seat belt if they are trapped in a burning or submerged vehicle.

This is stupid. Why don’t they just remove the ban?

Never, ever, not for a nanosecond, trust any person who wants to disarm you. Anybody can look to motive and easily see that they have the worst of intentions when it comes down to your well-being.

One-armed man with a switchblade against a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest.

Make it happen.

Excuse me. I heard the word 'switch blade', and the article is talking about self-defense measures.

What is the point of the article?

'd hate to see these folks trying to shoot their way out of a stuck seat belt if they are trapped in a burning or submerged vehicle.

What's that supposed to mean? You think that because you have two arms, you'll automatically win?...lots of people are dead for making assumptions of this sort.

If the so-called handicapped person wants more than a switchblade, I see a non-issue. We ALL have that Second Amendment RIGHT.

From the article:Backers of the measure say legalizing switchblades would eliminate a need for one-armed people to be forced to open folding knives with their teeth in emergencies.

The article did not mention a single word about "self defense measures". It only mentioned "emergencies".

My point was simply that every emergency does not require the use of a weapon. Sometimes, such as when someone needs to cut a seat belt to escape from a vehicle, it calls for a tool such as a knife. Many people carry a knife as a tool, in addition to the weapon (firearm) that they (we) also carry.

My post was intended to make the point that sometimes people with one arm might simply need an edged tool that they can open quickly. There was no snarky attitude intended, and none was necessary in the reply.

I don't know how this pertains to what I said about seat belts in my original post.

Have a pleasant evening.
