It doesn't matter if it wasn't meant for our ears. It doesn't matter that NBA players might do it all the time.
And it doesn't matter in the slightest that Kobe Bryant(notes) wasn't using the usual, hateful, meaning behind a homophobic slur that starts with an "f" and ends with those who are mindful of the pain and suffering that the LGBT community has gone through cringing as we hear it.
Before we get to the specifics, here is Bryant's statement on the incident:
"What I said last night should not be taken literally. My actions were out of frustration during the heat of the game, period. The words expressed do NOT reflect my feelings towards the gay and lesbian communities and were NOT meant to offend anyone."
We know, Kobe. That's not the point.
Bryant apparently called referee Bennie Adams a "f*****" following both a personal and technical foul call that didn't go Kobe's way on Tuesday night (the video can be seen here), and Bryant has been rightfully excoriated for it. The league is investigating the tape, and the (needed) discussion is out in the open.
And the discussion should end here. He shouldn't have said it on Tuesday night, he shouldn't be saying the word away from cameras, and he shouldn't ever say it again. Doesn't matter, no excuses, I don't want to hear it. There are hundreds of individual curse words to use in that situation, don't use that one. We know he wasn't trying to question Adams' sexuality, or align being gay with negative connotations. It still doesn't give you license to shout that word.

I read somewhere they like male chicken rings.
“The words expressed do NOT reflect my feelings towards the gay and lesbian communities and were NOT meant to offend anyone.”
Ummm, I'm pretty sure they were meant to offend referee Bennie Adams.

Doesnt mean one is gay or defective for being gay.’
True enough. But sodomites are morally and spiritually defective and engaged in an utterly evil lifestyle.
:-\
Don’t you mean the “SA”?
There is still such a thing as right and wrong, and that is wrong. Period.

“Your highly offensive article”
Kelly,
You should stop with using hateful slurs yourself. The word ‘homophobic’ is a completely made up word to use as a hateful slur against anyone who does not believe in the left-wing perverted morality which claims that homosexuality and murdering babies is normal and good. Your views on trying to force your perverted morality on others is pure fascism and you should be ashamed. It is people like you that have murdered millions upon millions and have spread disease and corruption in this world. Now you want to force others to adhere to your sick and evil perversion of morality.
I will continue to stand for decency and morality and freedom against fascist perverts such as yourself with every chance possible until you go back underneath the rock you came out from.
So if he had called the referee a mofo, that's ok? Just don't call him a homo. (Beam me up Scotty....)
A brown one?
Anybody know what kind a ring rump rangers like? The rings of Uranus!
"Aw, shaddup, youse whiny fags........"
Apologizing for saying faggot is so gay.
South Park has shown us the way on this subject already.
If I got fined a dollar for each time I used the word, I’d be broke now.
Very interesting...if it’s okay to be a faggot, why do fags get upset when someone calls someone else a faggot?
Go figure. F###ing fags.
Kobe got fined 100,000 by the devil Stern and his cronies today..such utter horse crap..this is all about the liberal agenda and them wanting to ram their gay nonsense down our throats. KMart used the same word against Mark Cuban a few years ago, nothing happened. Kevin Garnett mocked Charlie Villanueva about his baldness, making jokes about cancer nothing happened. Allen Iverson called someone the same thing, he got a 5,000 fine, yet Kobe gets fined 100k, its pure BS
Good. Kobe is known for getting calls he shouldn’t by working the refs.
