I myself am pretty uneducated on Fripp. I’ve certainly heard of him. I will look and see what I can find!

Well, I own every King Crimson album (certainly don't own everything Fripp has played on) and even I'd say have fun, but keep in mind Crimson isn't for everybody. You'll either love it, or think it's the worst thing you've ever heard.

I also wonder, if, anywhere on the planet, there's a woman that is a King Crimson fan...

I saw Yes in Nashville, Steve Howe came out alone and said this is for all the musicians in Nashville. He played a classical Spanish guitar piece, the crowd was quiet and a end gave a standing ovation.

Andrew Lloyd Webber is a creep. His music is ear wash.

r how about Duane Allman’s solo on Layla, oh yes it was Duane Allman

Not to disrespect Duane, but Derek Trucks has him beat.

Eric Johnson’s “Zap” is even better than Cliffs of Dover.

The guitar solo towards the end(7:10) of November Rain is top notch!

Andy Summers - Bring on the night. That’s a police song actually, but that melody and riff is all Andy. One of the most under rated guitarists of all time. I swear, the guy never plays a straight chord, he is so interesting to listen to. Great tutorial here from Andy which includes “Bring on the Night” at the end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERYMlSJffcw&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Since this has turned into a name dropping fest of sorts, of all the greats, I have to add another name and song that deserves to be here on this long arguable list with the others.

Y'all can look up yourself what you think of the persistent old rumor that Jimi Hendrix alluded to this guy as the world's greatest guitar player. (He did record in Hendrix's studio.)

In the mid 70's I heard a similar rumor myself from someone who kept up with the business -- specifically that David Gilmour, when asked how it felt to be the world's greatest guitarist, told the interviewer that he would have to ask Phil Keaggy to find out. Keaggy himself denies the rumors -- heard him deny it at a concert in 1977 when he was asked about it by the MC -- but I think that the fact that the rumors are even credible is a testimony about how good he is.

Phil Keaggy - Emerging - Struck by the Love (1977)

   Hear it at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWKy1iVgQC4

(And NO, I did not post it on YouTube -- I just looked it up -- but I do have it on vinyl!)

   Also check: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Keaggy_Band

OK, maybe not "the best" among all solos, but listen to all of it -- you might put it or another of his solos in the top echelon. (Keaggy could play "Aqualung" in his sleep so top 20 for sure!)

I loved that guy in the 70's, especially this song. Contemporary Christian Music pioneer. Grammy winner. He is an even better guitarist now, although still not too famous. You can certainly get behind his lyrics compared to those of some of the other greats who are great at guitar but do not seem so successful at life.

Finally someone mentions Elliot Easton of The Cars. The solo on Just What I Needed is deceptively difficult to play properly, and damn tasty too. But a few that didnt make the list...

Rhodes-Over the Mountain, Goodbye to Romance, many more
SRV-Riviera Paradise. Amazing...
Yngwie-Now Your Ships Are Burned, 2nd solo

Right you are! It’s a lame list if Ritchie isn’t even listed! Also, “Stargazer” from Rainbow. Some of the solos listed are CRAP!!! Where’s Jeff Beck or Clapton or Zappa? This list is like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-not talent or achievement based but “we like you based”.
