Is Puerto Rico an United States state?
Mikey

Posted on 04/14/2011 12:06:50 PM PDT by Mikey

I'm having a discussion with a friend who is a liberal and he keeps stating over and over that Puerto Rico is an official state of the United States. I on the other hand keep telling him its a territory NOT a State.

He keeps saying he can prove it, except he never produces any evidence.
I've showed him some older documents on the subject that Puerto Rico is a territory and not a state, but that will not convince him.

Does any Freeper out there in freeland have any recent documents and can prove Puerto Rico is in fact still a territory and not a state or is a state. If yes or no it is a state, provide me with the proper URL so that I verify this.

There's your problem. Liberals are illiterate.

It’s a commonwealth of the US, and as such, does not have to pay federal income taxes.

You shouldn’t be friends with someone who is too stupid to use wikipedia.

Patronize him and tell him that it's one of the 57 states according to Obama.

Your liberal friend must believe that Puerto Rico was the 51st of the 57 states that make up the USA.

Definitely NOT — yet. There’s a constant Democrat campaign for PR’s adoption as a state but we have more than enough welfare payments already. We don’t need to add thousands more welfare grifters and Democrat voters.

Intellectual arrogance is one of the prime pathologies of “progressives” ... they are the last people that will ever consider that they might be wrong about something.

PR is a territory, not a state. Not yet anyway.

No.

If it was a state, there would be 51 stars on the flag.

Not a state, they don't pay our taxes.

They have shown no interest in statehood. They get the benefits without the inherent taxes that would come.

The lefties fantasize about statehood for them as a way for the left to stay in power. It is not that simple over there.

Ask him if Puerto Rico is a state, who are it’s two senators? All states are represented by two senators, but only states. That’s why Washington DC does not have senators, it’s not a state.

"Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico

Associated Free State of Puerto Rico, is an unincorporated territory of the United States, located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, east of the Dominican Republic and west of the Virgin Islands."

From ikipedia, which he loves if he's a lib.

Google “Insular Cases”.

Puerto Rico is, officially, an organized, non-incorporated territory of the United States (an aberration by an activist Supreme Court since no such thing is outlined in the Constitution - see my profile page).

For practical purposes Puerto Rico is “within” the United States. This means that for most purposes Puerto Rico is “like” a state. It is within the U.S. Customs territory.
