Tennant was really good, if he would have stuck around longer I think he could have given Tom Baker a run for his money as best Doctor. I wasn't terribly impressed with Matt Smith at the start of last season, but by the end he was starting to grow on me, I think he has potential, time will tell. Probably the one I liked to least was the first one of the new generation (don't even know his name). He just didn't fit the character well, kind of looked like Bruce Willis in Die Hard, not exactly how I picture the Doctor.
Funny how that works.
I thought Tennant was totally over the top and totally unsuited to the role, too energetic, whooping a lot and bigging himself up.
Matt Smith goes for the “understated eccentric boffin who’s not of this world” deadpan and it works for me.
It’ll be interesting to see if Matt Smith can convince you that the Doctor is a harmless pacifist eccentric AND a ruthless, dispassionate and war strategist who’s committed genocide, in the next.
Both Tennant and Eccleston failed dismally.
All the Doctors since Peter Davison have tried to do the Doctor’s dark side, and for my money the only one who’s ever managed to do it convincingly was Sylvester McCoy (who I think is shamefully underrated given that three of the best DW stories from the 80s came from Season 26 and McCoy was just starting to do the Cartmel stories with real teeth to them, when the show got cancelled).
Shame about Liz Sladen, but what a trooper, eh? She did look a bit gaunt in the last series of TSJA.
