(04-19) 16:06 PDT LONDON, United Kingdom (AP) --

Elisabeth Sladen, a star sidekick of the "Doctor Who" series and a popular children's show actress, has died of cancer Tuesday, the BBC said. She was 63.

Sladen joined the broadcaster in 1973 as Doctor Who's assistant Sarah Jane Smith, an investigative journalist-turned-intrepid time traveler whose on-screen energy and tongue-in-cheek delivery eventually gave her career an unlikely second act in her own spin-off series, "The Sarah Jane Adventures."

"Sarah Jane Smith was everybody's hero when I was younger, and as brave and funny and brilliant as people only ever are in stories," Steven Moffat, the series's lead writer, said in a statement. "Many years later, when I met the real Sarah-Jane — Lis Sladen herself — she was exactly as any child ever have wanted her to be."

Tom Baker isn't a spring chicken anymore, either. This is one of the few shows I can remember watching with my dad when I was little.

When saran wrap, tinsel, flashing christmas lights, and blonde British women were something special.

Every saturday afternoon was the time spent on Dr.Who.

I think I may have had a crush on her when I was a teen. However, I think I may have had a crush on everything that wore a skirt back then, too.

awh, man, I loved that old show. I watched it Saturday nights with a geeky college girlfriend of mine.

If I remember correctly, she played Sarah Jane in one of the more recent Dr. Who episodes. In my opinion, the Tom Baker years were the best years of the show, although the most recent couple of Doctors have been pretty good as well. After Baker left, the show pretty much sucked until until it was brought back in the early 2000’s.

Bet that ended the first time you went to Scotland.

That's really weird because on the series "Battlestar Galactic" she had cancer

I wonder if she did and it was worked into the series

I would tend to agree. So far, I like David Tennant better than Matt Smith from the more modern era.

Tennant was really good, if he would have stuck around longer I think he could have given Tom Baker a run for his money as best Doctor. I wasn't terribly impressed with Matt Smith at the start of last season, but by the end he was starting to grow on me, I think he has potential, time will tell. Probably the one I liked to least was the first one of the new generation (don't even know his name). He just didn't fit the character well, kind of looked like Bruce Willis in Die Hard, not exactly how I picture the Doctor.

...she played Sarah Jane in one of the more recent Dr. Who episodes.

That was an intro/crossover epi or two for The Sarah Jane Adventures.

They even brought back K9.

Great line by Billie Piper's BF talking to SJ: "OMG- I'm the tin dog!"

She was in a David Tennant episode. i thought she looked great. i’m very surprised to know that she had cancer. You would never have known it by looking at her unless this was a ver recent fast cancer.

RIP Ms. Sladen. Sarah Jane was a great character, and she did a great job revising the charater in The Sarah Jane Adventures.

One of the best episodes of Tennant’s era. It really dissected the relationship of The Doctor/Sarah/Rose. You also see the the Doctor highly tempted to side with the bad guys, and it is Sarah Jane who pulls him back to his senses. I liked that episode a lot.

Funny how that works.

I thought Tennant was totally over the top and totally unsuited to the role, too energetic, whooping a lot and bigging himself up.

Matt Smith goes for the “understated eccentric boffin who’s not of this world” deadpan and it works for me.

It’ll be interesting to see if Matt Smith can convince you that the Doctor is a harmless pacifist eccentric AND a ruthless, dispassionate and war strategist who’s committed genocide, in the next.

Both Tennant and Eccleston failed dismally.

All the Doctors since Peter Davison have tried to do the Doctor’s dark side, and for my money the only one who’s ever managed to do it convincingly was Sylvester McCoy (who I think is shamefully underrated given that three of the best DW stories from the 80s came from Season 26 and McCoy was just starting to do the Cartmel stories with real teeth to them, when the show got cancelled).

Shame about Liz Sladen, but what a trooper, eh? She did look a bit gaunt in the last series of TSJA.
