Macho Man Randy Savage -- one of the greatest wrestlers of all-time -- died today in a car accident in Tampa, Florida ... TMZ has learned.

TMZ spoke with Randy's brother, Lanny Poffo, who tells us the wrestling legend suffered a heart attack while he was behind the wheel around 9:25 AM ... and lost control of his vehicle.

Earlier this month, Savage celebrated his 1-year anniversary with his new wife Lynn.

Savage was 58.

Macho Man began wrestling in the WWF in 1985 and became a superstar with his trademark catchphrase "Ooooooh Yeaahhhhh."

UPDATE: Florida Highway Patrol tells TMZ ... Savage was driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler when he veered across a concrete median ... through oncoming traffic ... and "collided head-on with a tree."

Savage was transported to Largo Medical center, where he died from his injuries.

Savage's wife was a passenger in the vehicle during the collision -- but survived with "minor injuries." She was transported to a different local hospital where she was treated.

According to officials, Randy and Lynn were both wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Cops say alcohol was NOT a factor.

An investigation into the accident is underway.

If you’re going to mock someone who just died in a traffic accident, go over to DU or Daily Kos. Jerk.

Wow, feels like part of my childhood died since I was a big pro wrestling fan in the early/mid 90’s.

Sorry to hear this. Guess we're all getting older each day. Wonder what Elizabeth is doing these days.

Oh, no... sorry to hear that.

One of the more memorable moments for me at the gym was the day I was working out and looked up and ten feet away was Randy Savage standing there quietly doing dumbbell curls. He was in town for some reason and got a 1-day guest pass to workout at the gym. He was a nice guy, quiet and reserved, not at all like his public persona (of course!). Very sad news. RIP.

Miss Elizabeth passed on several years ago. So did Sensational Sherry who the Macho Man also had a relationship with.

Agreed. Too bad this guy died, but “Pro” wrestling is retarded. White trash polo.

She died as a result of a drug and alcohol overdose in 2003 in the home she shared with Lex Luger

That's even sadder.

Wow....burned hard and fast methinks:

"On May 1, 2003, in Marietta, Georgia, Lex Luger called 9-1-1 from his home and reported that Elizabeth was not breathing. She did not respond to mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, and paramedics rushed her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Elizabeth was 42 years old.......a search of the residence revealed a number of illicit controlled substances, including anabolic steroids, OxyContin, synthetic growth hormone, testosterone, temazepam and alprazolam.

Feeling that the lifestyle and being a part of that industry had taken her daughter from her, Elizabeth's mother pointedly banned anyone from the wrestling industry from attending her funeral, which was held in Kentucky."

Who would have thought George “The Animal” Steele would outlive both Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth...

A friend was working in a hotel years ago and a number of the wrestlers were staying there one weekend. He was alone in the elevator when Savage got in, calm and normal. He recognized him (obviously) and said “Hey Macho Man. What’s up?” Savage immediately got into character and said “Goin’ down to the pool, gonna git me a tan. Oooohhh Yeaaaahhhhh!”

My friend said all of the wrestlers he met were great guys, but Macho Man was the best.
