Many don't realize that John Wayne struggled a bit to get to his famed career as a western legend. In 1926, John Wayne started his journey in the film industry by being an extra, a propman and a stuntman. His first starring role would be in a Fox Film western called "The Big Trail" (1930). He was let go from Fox after starring in three leads.

I second the motion.
I have one of his earliest films “Overland Stage Riders” - he stars with Louise Brooks, the famous beauty of Prix de Beaute, Pandora’s Box and Diary of a Lost Girl. It’s the very early 1930s. Louise’s career was sadly ending through drink and bad choices, the Duke’s was rising. She thought he was great.
Watched a good’un last night, on DVR: Trouble Along The Way (1953) with Donna Reed.
LOL..I just saw that! He was (and still is) my favorite Movie Star!

I was and am a huge John Wayne fan. Contrary to popular opinion, I think his best westerns were:
1: The Searchers (of course)
2: The Three Godfathers
3: The Angel and The Badman
The Angel and the Badman is one of my favorites of his!! I also like California.
bttt
Wanted to add you can see Wayne as Singing Sandy the singing Cowboy!
Riders of Destiny (1933)

Here John Wayne plays Singin Sandy Saunders, the screens first singing cowboy. Singin Sandys ten-gallon hat was black instead of white. This movie is a little more intense than your normal musical cowbody movie of the time. Sandy says
One of my other all time faves of his is A Lady Takes a Chance. John Wayne with a besotted look on his face just cracks me up!! Lol
“The Big Trail” is out now on DVD in its original wide format. I think it’s a great movie.
It’s a very early “talkie”, and you can see how the movie industry was making the transition from silent pictures.
Save me a seat Pilgrim!
Dittos to that, pardner! I LOVE the Encore Western channel, particularly the reruns of ‘Lawman’ and ‘Wagon Train.’ I DVR both each day and watch them each night.
The Big Trail runs right up there with my favorite John Wayne western. Everytime I watch it..I see more things that I have missed.
