SMICKSBURG (KDKA) — An Amish woman from Indiana County died this week after an accident while she was doing laundry.

Ella Miller, 32, was doing laundry in a pot over an open flame early Monday morning.

State police say she threw some kerosene on the fire in an attempt to intensify the heat, but that caused an explosion which caught her clothing on fire.

Miller suffered first, second and third degree burns. At her request, she was treated with home remedies by family and neighbors.

Same here. There’s a large Amish community in northern Indiana County, one of the largest in Pennsylvania.

This poor woman must have suffered terribly before she died. Imagine how painful extensive third degree burns would be. The community near Smicksburg is supposedly one of the more traditional ones.

I am sure some “elder” refused the “English” medicine for her.
Why are you blaming some "old guy" when it says right in the story - "At her request, she was treated with home remedies by family and neighbors." ?

Just commenting on something that I know happens a lot. I know some paramedics who work in an Amish area and the “elders” show up and start spouting this and that about “der English” even when children are involved (with life threatening injuries). Even if this was the woman’s initial request, I wonder when the infection/fever/pain started running through her body... did she still request to stay at home?

Before I read the article, I figured the incident probably involved getting something caught in the wringer.

Praying for the repose of this poor woman’s soul and for God’s mercy and consolation for her family.
