BTW: with iCloud, Apple moves the goalposts again. Cross-device multi-app data syncing made trivial, including music - and that much faster & pervasive than anything Amazon or Google can score. Google's apps are the closest competition. Microsoft is in the dust now.

Have always loved Androids notification system and quite pleased Apple integrated their own look-a-like. Nothing wrong with taking good ideas from the scene and implementing it their own way. I suspect Google Music will have a bit of catchup to make up for with the iTunes Match.

No more tethering. iOS devices need not exist as a device tethered to a computer. The “iPad for Grandma” has arrived.

Yup, notifications look viable now. I barely grasp the notion, having shut off almost all notifications from sheer annoyance.

And Match will be hard to match. Google and Amazon addressed the “put your tunes in the cloud” issue by ignoring publishers; Apple asked nicely and wrote some big checks, so now syncing music libraries is a matter of minutes, not weeks. Amazon will be hard-pressed to ask publishers “ok, can we make arrangements like Apple’s?” after blowing ‘em off before.

Gotta love competition. Apple just made major steps to keep pace with android. W/O android, we would not be seeing several of these updates. The new free MobileMe features is a google equalizer too. we all will have better products with this growing rivalry.

Stuff you buy from Amazon can be automatically added to Amazon’s Cloud and accessed from whatever device you want. What’s the difference?

The difference is iTunes Match will scan your ripped music, identify matches with iTunes Store offerings, and make those songs immediately (ok, give it a few minutes) available on all your devices - rather than having to upload all XXGB of stuff over a prolonged period.

I could have my 46GB collection synced with iCloud by tomorrow for $25/yr. Amazon will cost a lot more and take a lot longer.

I’ve got 20GB on Amazon and it didn’t cost me anything. So what if it takes a little bit to upload?

That’s what a 50/50 connection is for.

And considering iTunes can’t even find the album art for half my music for some stupid reason, good luck with it actually matching the entire song.

I love how people boil down over 200 new features, 1500 new apis for IOS5 and pinpoint one or 2 features with “I can already do that with X, whats the big deal”

The big deal is the overall improved experience and very tightly integrated new features that blow anything else out of the water.

Anyone can argue over a single similar feature and whether it is truly new or unique.

Android is the only thing even remotely approaching IOS in ease of use, intuitiveness (is that a word?) and smooth integration of all features. It is my opinion that Android (and others) still have quite a ways to go to provide a similar experience.

The "overall improved experience and very tightly integrated new features" are nothing less than a major move to shift the entirety of people's computing experiences out of their private computers and onto corporately controlled surveillance servers... er... I mean the "cloud."

Jobs is still Jobs - Mr. "be free from Big Brother" IS Big Brother, with a vengence - but a nice, comfy, easy, group-accepted vengence, of course.

People who even think about privacy (who aren't elite, that is), are SO behind the times. And The Group certainly does not approve.

Oh so sorry, “cloud” isn’t nearly soft enough for Steve’s purposes.

I meant “iCloud.”

LOL

All your personal information being out there means someone can get it. Like the government...

Moreover, what happens if a virus hits the cloud? It’s done...

I’m not really clear about all of this. What is stored in “the cloud”?

Do you have any information on how OSX Lion will handle Time Machine and Capsule in regards to “cloud” integration? Thanks.
