The Mossberg 500 is great. One of my brothers gave me his when he went to Vietnam and then let me keep it when he got back. I gave it to a nephew about 10 years ago. The gun was beat up but still a good shooter. And still is, from what I hear.

I had to run to my closet and make sure it was a Remington in there.

It's the Mossberg 500 12 gauge.
Mine is 20 gauge. Not as much kick on the wrist and still kicks home invasion butt. I recommend putting the pistol grip on with a shortened stock for recoil help and ease in home/hallway movement myself.
3" Magnums, #2 Buckshot for me. (I'm a cheapskate so no "big brand" ammo) and slugs for when you need that extra something.
You can get #1 Buckshot for yours.

I finally broke down and purchased my first gun for home protection.
While I commend you for taking steps to protect your family and property am I to understand that this is your first gun ever or do you own something else as well?

“I lost all my guns in a boating accident”

What an amazing coincidence! I lost mine the same way up on the Catawba River. It brings a tear to my eye when I think about it.

Once you become proficient with the Mossberg 500 you may want to upgrade to the Mossberg 930 SPX.

My pump action noise is made way before someone comes through the door. The bright flash and all of those 00 buck balls from the 12 ga 3” mags is a real dissuader though :)

... a pistol grip but I wont attach that unless ...

I keep a hacksaw next to mine for the same reason.       ;^)

Now all you need is a Choate pistol grip stock and a weapons light.

I can appreciate the 12 gauge for you. I hope your wife is strong enough for it. Personally, a 20 gauge is enough for me. 12 gauge is too much, 10 gauge would likely knock me down on my butt. Beyond that, congrats on the new arrival! May it keep you both safe.

"The boom works better but is a tad messier."

I subscribe to your school of thought on that, drift. Not sure if I would though if I didn't afford myself the luxury of hiring-out the cleanup. Yucky messy. ;-)

Good choice, I own one of those. Mine has double pistol grips. It works great from the hip; 3 inch magnum 00 buckshot gives it a good healthy recoil. :):)

One thing to be aware of with the Mossberg regarding the use of pistol grips is that the slide release is to the left and slightly behind the trigger guard. The pistol grip will make it awkward to depress the button unless you are shooting left-handed.

And in addition, the 500 has a tang safety. With a pistol grip installed, you can't reach the safety when your hands are in shooting position. No good.

Do NOT install the pistol grip.

I’d definitely hire it out. Of course the only time I would is if there were no options. Would rather clean some dirtbag outta my house than a family member.
