(Reuters) - An Apple Inc (AAPL.O) store employee has started a union in a rare move at a company known for its near-fanatical following and cutting-edge mystique.
Cory Moll, a part-time employee at an Apple store in San Francisco, is working to form a union to fight for better wages and benefits and to address what he says are unfair practices in the company's glass-and-steel retail showrooms.

My wife and I were discussing unions last evening. My comments were along the line that being a youngster in the really contentious days in the early 30s there was a need for establishing balance between productivity and compensation. However once the unions got into the government pockets, or visa virsa, our entire free enterprise system was altered. I see no redeeming value reason for any government support of unions just as I believe government should not prevent any group of people from joining together in free will to promote their belief/cause. The only justification for government involvement is to see no laws are broken but not to mandate ‘fairness’. Today’s unions see and are able to use government to enforce their ideas for a ‘new world order’ (Bush1) of communism for the elite.
“Liberal Apple will be torn between profits and supporting the dem agenda. This will be interesting to watch.”
If a union movement should gain traction among Apple employees, and I don’t think it will, you can count on the brick and motar stores in threatened areas to shut down. Apple will go to internet stores in those areas. Count on it. Jobs may be a liberal but he’s a business man first and foremost....
You probably do not live here in SF so forget that minimum wage argument. What employees here want is a clear and obvious way to progress within an organization and a chance to advance since many enjoy retail. However, hiring mostly part-time is often a convenient way for SF companies to keep from paying basic benefits and avoiding scheduling conflicts. For one, it allows them to ignore requests for days off even if requested way in advance.
Retail employees job status reflect the current poor job market situation, they are not the cause. Even if SF part timers are very well educated as compared to other parts of the country,- (which they are), their dilemma is having to accept low paying part-time jobs on poor terms since that is all that is available. The companies here enjoy what is often called ‘perfect competition’. It is not a union issue, but if companies are not responsive, well........
Depends on the state moron.
Jobs is one of the darlings of the Liberal, Socialist, and Progressive movement. Lets see how many of them start protesting Apple if he cans the guy and tries to squash the whole thing.
I hope this kid is successful.
Liberals like Jobs need to take responsibility for their own ideology by living under the effects of their ideology.
Liberals universally exempt themselves from their own taxes, regulations, labor policies, etc.
I’m tired of liberals imposing their will on everybody except themselves.
Let them live and die by their own failures.
Calling me names does not change the fact that you cannot fire someone for trying to start a union......IN ANY STATE!
>This isn’t an anti-union rant, just sayin...
I;m not offended by your rant. They are expensive overbloated pieces if fine machinery, but the fact you “subliminally” TRIED to apologize for it when FR is a pro-free market, anti-union forum is disconcerting.
An anti-union forum?
I don't think so.
FR seems to be an anti-government union forum. My comment on post #1 was vehemently anti-union, some unions are just too greedy.
But to be honest with you, I'm a member of a state government union, but we pay our fair-share unlike some other government unions. So, if I would be completely anti-union, I'd be a hypocrite.
what’s a “fair share”?
Put the kid on straight commission.
Our retirement system contributions and benefits are equitable to the private sector.
As a gubmint’ union, your union is also part of Odumbo’s waiver program, yes?
I hope making $14 an hour gives the employee incentive to better himself and to move into a higher income bracket.
Max, you and I arrived here at FR at about the same time, we have had numerous post exchanges in the past, most pleasent; you’re trying to start a fight and I won’t be part of it.
Actually he hasn't donated to Obama or anyone, not even the DNC, since 2006.

Firing = big fines. Unionizing = Big Problems.
Likely would be cheaper for Apple to close the store and lay off everyone there. I love how liberals rarely see "unintended consequences".
No, we are.
Unions had their place in the 1930's.
Now they are just Democrat / Communist front organizations.
