A Florida teacher is off the hook for punching a student in the face, but whether she'll get to return to her job is still in question.
Prosecutors decided to drop their case against art teacher Sandy Hadsock, 64, saying a student's cell phone video of the confrontation last month, along with witness statements, show she acted in self defense, "Today" reports.
"I told you, step back," the much taller boy shouts at Hadsock before she busts his lip.
The student has not been identified, according to "Today," but other students in the classroom say he backed the teacher up against a wall, calling her "vulgar" names.
Initially arrested and charged with felony child abuse, Hadsock -- who was voted the school's teacher of the year last year by students -- was placed on leave -- her first disciplinary action in 23 years with the Hernando County school district, according to the news show.
But, despite, the charges being dropped, school officials tell "Today" they have not yet decided if she'll be allowed to return to the school.
"Certainly, our evaluation and our determination is based on what's best in the interest of the students in this school district," Brayan Blavatt, Hernando County Schools superintendent, tells the news show.

This is one teacher that needs a raise....and a medal.
Right a teach with a little cred is one they should get rid of.
Yeah I chose to withhold comment on this one till we knew more.
Within a few years we will read of how this boy “was turning his life around”, “was getting a job so he could pay his child support” and “loved his mother.”
Sure sounds like the best interests of the students in the district would be served by horsewhipping this young hoodlum and leaving him staked out in the hot sun for a day after the whipping. Maybe he might get the message.
Of course, this will be background for a news article covering his capital murder trial.
Twenty-three years of service, popular with the students and staff, acted in self-defense with video proof and student testimony. And the administration isn’t sure if she should get her job back.
...What does her union say?
I, too, need more information on this one. I am wondering if, based on the information provided, this student was trying to force her to submit to his order to step back the way predators test for weakness before daring to launch an attack. She’s got no history of this kind of behavior. I would hate to think that THIS is what it is coming to. Maybe there’s more here - my mind is jumping to the stories I’ve heard about violent students ‘running’ the classrooms and I’d like to hear the opposing view.
In any other situation of a 64 year old lady defending herself against a teenage punk, we’d give the lady a medal.
Promote this woman.
And clone her.
Why would you hold comment?
What possible reason could an old woman have for swinging out of fear, at an approaching assaulter except to stop him in his tracts?
Did she bring it on herself? Nah, that don’t make the grade with me.
64 years old and she clocked a brat!
Man, I am so tired of kids not being taught respect. It is “Mr. FD2003” to you kid, not “heya Free!”
If a child takes an aggressive stance against a person of authority (teacher, peace office, etc.) then it should be made clear that it ain’t gonna fall in the kid’s fabor, no matter what.
“based on what’s best in the interest of the students in this school district,”
Give her a raise, that’s what is best in the interests of the students in this school district.
A lesson that “student behavior like this will NOT be tolerated in our classrooms” is the best educational experience for the kids.
There you go. Good translation
When will we will find out about his love for torturing animals. :>(
I think the school is on her side, but is waiting while they line up their attorneys and get all their ducks in a row...this kid’s mother will no doubt try to sue!@!!
Perhaps in a way, they are trying to protect the teacher from the lawsuits, etc. this world has gone crazy.
In the video, the kid is white, so there won’t be any future story of him turning his life around or getting a job so he can pay his child support. His mother won’t be describing him as an “honor student” or as a “good boy.” /sarcasm
