This is the craziest thing I've read for a long time! Which side of the door do I want to be on, when the end comes? I know I'm in Jesus' side and that trumps everything. It is even economical, if that's a concern when the end of the world arrives, LOL!

“The Shelter” ..... interesting that the episode aired 11 months PRIOR to the Cuban Crisis....when there was a LOT of talk about “bomb shelters”
Easy inexpensive bunker plan:
1) Find an area that you can legally and physically dig in.
2) Rent a bobcat (usually $200 to $300 per day)
3) Spend all day digging a hole 10’ deep by 10’ wide by 40’ long, plus another 12 long for a ramp
4) buy burlap bags and concrete
5) have 2 tons of 1” gravel delivered. Get the delivery the same day that you do the dig
6) Use the bobcat to move the gravel into the pit, save some gravel to make gravel bags for drainage
7) purchase and have delivered a standard shipping container (used can be had for about $2,000)
8) create a sackcrete floor for the container (fill burlap with concrete stack in place, soak with hose and let dry 30 days) Make sure sackcrete floor extends at least one length of bags beyond all edges of the container dimentions
9) after concrete floor has curred, place shipping container in the middle
9) If necessary, place additional drainage to keep water table off the structure
10) stack sackcrete bags around sides and back of container. Leave the front open
11) Purchase 20 each 5/8” by 20 foot rebar and have delivered. Cut into 10’ sections (40 total)
12) Cut the rebar ends so that one end is at an angle about 60 degrees
13) Using a sledgehammer and drive the rebar into the stacked sackcrete on the sides.
14) bend the excess rebar over. Long pipe may help here
15) Make a wood frame to go around the top of the shipping containers and the stacked sackcrete. Some people use this time to put in a ventalation pipe which is a good idea if you are going to think about living there for a while. Some people also put in a light pipe for sunlight.
16) Soak the sackcrete and have a concrete top poured of at least 6” over the top of the shipping container. Make sure the rebar is covered by at least 2”. 7 to 8 yards of concrete may be required. More if you want an extra thick top.
17) Allow to cure for 30 days before back filling the dirt. Tamp the dirt down and cover with grass or bushes (no trees)
18) With either sackcrete bags or with cement block, create an 8’ by 8’ opening in front of the shipping container. Add stairs or ladder
19) cover with a storm shelter door.
Cost - between $4,000 and $7,000 and about 120 hrs of labor
Provides 400 sq feet of emergancy shelter. Not very nice accomodations but functional.
Additional things to consider:
Change the door to both lock and open from the inside.
Waste disposal - can you put in a toliet that ties into your septic tank / city disposal / composting toilet
Water and food
Shelving and sleeping areas
Insulation - most likely will stay about 55 degrees without heat source
electricity
If your build area is a hill, or if you have a large enough area, you can double the size by adding a second container.
If you do, be sure and cut a door way so that you can move between containers

Might be a good idea to build a ‘fake’ storage shed on top of this to hide the ventilation and sun pipes (behind a false wall)

Seems unlikely that you would have fall, if you have electricity then you can pump the sewage up hill of course.
If you tie into a city system, then being the low point of it during failure would be a very bad situation, I have seen homes flooded with massive amounts of the communities sewage.
I think that everyone should always accumulate the hand tools that they need to dig through the the wall of their shelter, and store them in the shelter.
BTW, one of the reasons I like this hymn is because of Gen. JEB Stuart, cavalry commander of the Army of Northern Virginia. He was mortally wounded at the battle of Yellow Tavern and, in his death bed, he asked his staff to sing Rock of Ages. Whenever we sing it in church, when we get to the part that goes "while I draw this fleeting breath,when mine eyes shall close in death" I get goosebumps! That was a man of faith!
