Pray For North Dakota
Weather Underground ^ | June 21, 2011 | Self

Please PRAY for the people of central North Dakota.

"The crest is going to be almost 10 feet higher than the '69 flood. The lower part of Minot is going to be underwater...The crest will be early Monday morning, so far. The levees and dikes will be over run Friday or Saturday, July 1...the crest was going to be 7 feet higher than the flood in '69.

Today it has been revised to 10 feet higher. Minot is going to be a lake...It's rain, coming from Canada. They need to open up their dams and are giving people time to get out of their homes before they let it loose. The system here was made to handle 5,000 cubic feet per second. A few weeks ago it was expected to get as high as 10,000 cfs but they are expecting almost 19,000cfs by Friday."

This is cut-and-pasted from my daughter-in-law's email. She lives outside Towner, east of Minot, North Dakota. The city has asked the neighboring farms and homes in safe areas to open storage areas like garages to help refugees store their valuables.

Prayers up!

We here in this part of Texas took in refugees from hurricane Rita, so neighbors and especially churches can really help. God bless you all.

Prayers up. One of the vendors we work with has an office in Minot. They have asked for patience if they are slow in responding to our requests. It sounds like heavy rains in Canada over the weekend have caused water releases north of Minot, and it is a very bad situation.

Adding my prayers. North Dakotans are about as opposite as the NOLA refugees from Katrina as you can get. They are good solid people who work and pull their weight and then some.

If it gets too bad, we here in TX will take you in just as we did the folks from Louisiana. You are our neighbors too.

God BLESS! you!! But it's not affecting me, aside from my worries for my kids. I live in Alaska, on top of a hill, up a hill. If I ever get threatened with a flood, the whole world will be under water...

FR has the best, kindest, most helpful people in the country. FReepers are a very special group of people.

If they can’t get to Texas, we have room here in WI too.

19,000cfs by Friday.”

...as a comparison, water was being released from Oahe dam at 150,000cfs until this past weekend when it was increased to 160,000cfs, both are record releases. Fairly sure the normal release is what goes through the turbines. That number is around 50,00cfs. These figures impact the Missouri River. Minot is on the Souris River which starts and ends in Canada and makes a loop though ND.

In light of all the flooding in the midwest and west, it is a shame there isn’t a giant water pipeline down toward Texas. We have gas pipelines, why not water. I’m sure I’m about to find out.

"Is Minot pronounced “minnow”?"

No, it's pronounced "My Knot."

Update from Minot N.D.

Yah, Arizona is about fried right off the map, Texas is dying of drought, and the upper midwest is drowning. Go figure...
